When it comes to side control escapes, I have recently shifted my mindset. Instead of approaching the task tactics (with more and better techniques), I now focus on the strategic goal of getting on my side then reinforcing that structure.

It aligns with a mantra I have had for a long time which is: the space I create must be mine to keep. And if I can be successful in achieving that goal of getting on my side with a strong structure, escape becomes almost effortless.

Case in point:

You can see one such example in this video.

Recently 1 of my smaller BJJ students was asking questions about how to add top pressure in Side Control. So, I gave them a few tips that helped them out and I figured I’d share them with you.

As a smaller person in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu you can certainly add top pressure. But you’ve got to me more deliberate than say a 300lbs person who can have sloppy positioning but still feel like a ton of bricks. And the video will give you some ideas on how to do that.

That said, all of the stuff that I talk about in the video is perfectly useable for a bigger person too. They’re sound fundamentals. But again, if you want to have strong pressure on top of side control and don’t want to get rolled, then they’re even more important if you’re not a massive person.

Hope the video is useful to you.

The under hook escape is a go to technique for MMA fighters, but often executed with errors. Without mastering all the details, you can end up stuck on your back, or worse, get caught with a guillotine.

There are a few key details to understand. First, you must shift their weight to your hips before attempting to hip thrust. Second, when you start working to your feet, quickly get your head either under their chin or dig the crown of your head into their temple. This protects you from getting head locked. Third, make sure you have an under hook, and not a waist hold.

Continuing our guillotine attack, we explored what I like to call the Guillotine Trap. This is when you have top side position, and the opponent goes for the under hook escape to stand up or reverse position. This can expose their neck and let you attack a guillotine, and can be a strong deterrent to anyone wishing to escape from bottom.

My wife and I are getting ready to embark on our honeymoon to the Maldives within the next few days. Of course, I’m excited to get to do more scuba diving and enjoying the beautiful views.

But, a part of me is not looking forward to breaking my routine. Not so much the fitness routine, as I can maintain that over there well enough. I’m talking about my daily posts. It took a year and change for me to get my act back together, and after a few good weeks of building my content up, I’m going to have to cut and run. I won’t have internet access for the first half of the trip, which definitely makes it tricky.

Fortunately, I have a plan. I have a treasure trove of seminar and camp footage that I have not released publicly before that I’m going to share while I’m away. Looking through my content, I’m going to share my last camp in Costa Rica, back from April 2021. This was an encore Kimura Trap System camp, where we focused on everything Kimura.

I start camps with a bang, focusing on the most important aspect of the system – the Kimura from side control. When this technique is fully understood and mastered, you will be a menace to everyone that shares the mats with you.

There are 8 key points to this technique, which most beginners only know 3-4, with experts knowing maybe 5-6. I have yet to encounter someone that knew all 8 points before I met them, so before you dismiss the Kimura from side mount as being “basic,” I urge you to take a close look. The 1 or 2 points you might not know can result in huge gains of efficiency.

P.S.: If you enjoyed this video, you could be featured in my next video by joining my next camp. I’m going to be heading back to Costa Rica from June 6-12 with Hero Academy. Hero Academy is a 501c3 charity that helps the local community of Tamarindo, in part by giving all kids free instruction in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. So by registering, not only are you rewarding yourself with a training vacation, but the proceeds are going to support the charity and local community. A true win/win situation. You can learn more about it below:

In today’s video I’ll be showing you guys the “Iron Squirrel” position from side control and guard passing battles in action.

It’s a simple defensive movement that’s focused on controlling the inside space of the offensive person’s body. It’s useful for avoiding submissions, setting up escapes and stopping guard passes. If you’re trying to increase your defense and survivability in BJJ, this idea is excellent.

And while the position and the way I’m doing it in this video is specific to side control bottom and similar areas. The idea behind controlling the inside space is useful from almost any position.

Hopefully you enjoy seeing the position being used in action and hopefully it gives you some ideas for training.
