I was recently asked if drilling is 100% necessary to get good at BJJ. Now, when we say drilling, I interpret this as meaning, “do we need to perform large amounts of repetitions over and over again” to an unresisting opponent.

The answer is no. There are ways to work around it. And in this video, I share an idea from a conversation I had with BJJ world champ Bernardo Faria who hated drilling moves over and over again but was very successful in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

The idea I share from the conversation is very simple and straight-forward, but the discipline to do it during training could make huge improvements in your game.

Hope the tip helps.

Today’s question is about not improving in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu even when you’re training harder than ever. This is the basic situation going on for John who’s hit a plateau in his BJJ progress. Now he says he’s training even harder than he used to in order to break out of the plateau, but he’s still stuck.

So, in the video I’ll share why I ditch rolling harder or training harder when I’m trying to break out of a BJJ plateau. Now, keep in mind I’m still training hard. I love training hard. But sometimes going even harder isn’t the best route. Keep in mind that the process I talk about in this video is mine. It might work for you, it might not. I also give some examples of what this process looks like in training during situational rolling or full rolling.

I also share a book that I enjoyed in the video. If you’d like to check it out, look at the link below.
https://amzn.to/3Mqsa3h

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the video. Talk with you next time.

What is the difference from White Belt to Blue Belt and Brown Belt to Black Belt. That’s the question for today’s Q&A video. It’s an interesting one too. Because each belt / level of skill seems to have a certain pattern to it.

Going from White Belt to Blue Belt is one of the biggest shifts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. You go from knowing nothing to having a foundation of knowledge. If it was a language it would be like not knowing a language to being able to speak.

Brown Belt to Black Belt is usually a bit more subtle. In my experience with BJJ people’s game at this point is set. It’s just in need of a bit of refinement and this is usually what you see at this level. Think of it as sanding out a piece of woodwork to get it a smooth finish.

Hopefully the video gives you some ideas to chew on for your own BJJ.

Have you ever dealt with a big strong spazzy White Belt in BJJ, or have you ever been called a spaz? If you struggle with this situation in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu whether you’re the spaz or you’re the person frustrated with a spaz in your gym, I hope this video is helpful with your training.

In the video I start off by talking about my own spazzy beginning in Brazilian Jiujitsu as I was probably the most reckless, explosive and wild roll in my gym, and probably the craziest I’ve ever seen.

I also talk about how as a coach I’ve ever become frustrated with spazzy new people in the gym.

With that in place I talk about how I deal with spaz type people during BJJ training and why you should learn to use your skill against someone like this. It’s an important test to how your techniques work against an untrained person. I also talk about how I overcame my ultra-intense beginnings to get a handle on my wild rolling.

I hope that for all the Spazzy types and people frustrated with them that the video will give you some useful perspectives on how to handle the situation.

Thanks for watching the video!
