Recently I got a question regarding Sport BJJ and Self-Defense. The question was from someone who doesn’t train Brazilian Jiu-jitsu yet. And they said that they didn’t understand why you practice a sport BJJ style technique for an art that prides itself on self-defense.

In this video I share some ideas on why people in Jiu-jitsu practice sport style techniques even though it may not be the best option for self-defense.

I also share why in a lot of cases what keeps people training is not the self-defense techniques but rather the connection to people formed through the sport training.

Again, this is my opinion and experience. If you’ve been training for a long time you’re more than welcome to share yours in the comments below.

I’ve had a few requests for some “Big Guy Jiu-Jitsu” techniques, and this is one of the first that always come to mind. The Sao Paulo pass, popularized by Roberto Tozi, is a powerful pass that is perfect for a smashy BJJ game.
•
Don’t be fooled though, this isn’t just a pass for big, heavy players. I personally like to do this pass to bigger guys (although I am far from a big guy myself), as they tend to not like being folded and smashed the way this pass happens.
•
So, whether you’re a big or small person, I hope you get some usefulness out of this pass. Let me know what you think. Thanks for watching!

This is the first in a series I filmed with my good friends JD Caputo and Coty Kellison, looking at offensive use of the clothing for chokes in both a training environment and street environment. There is a lot of potential for this, and here is one of my favorites with the jacket, referred to as the Gerbi choke. It is so named after an Israeli Judoka who has hit this multiple times at the highest levels of competition. Please let me know what you think, like and share.

The debate between ‘sport’ and ‘self defense’ BJJ has been overblown because good jiu-jitsu is always better than bad jiu-jitsu. If your focus is on self defense then find the best BJJ school you can and, if necessary, supplement that training with a little bit of boxing, kickboxing or MMA training to become comfortable in the striking zone rather than going to a lesser school that claims to teach special ‘self defense’ BJJ techniques. The magic is all in the training against resistance and dealing with pressure, and it is much easier to adjust technique on the fly than it is to suddenly develop the capacity to deal with someone who is using all their strength, energy and willpower to crush you!
