The Eagle Claw is probably my most used passing technique these days. It’s easy to grab, but hard to break. I’m not the only one who does this of course. In the past weekend, you could see young champion Tye Ruotolo using the eagle claw constantly while passing the guard.

Why does it work so well? Because when you grip the ankle with the eagle claw, you place your thumb behind their leg by their achilles. This makes breaking the grip hard, as everyone wants to kick forward and not backwards. Plus, by kicking backwards, they open their guard even more.

As a result, you get a rock solid grip that allows you spread them out to pass. For the very wirey and flexible people, you can even lift with the eagle claw, which will turn their hips away from you and give you the pass too.

That’s when the fun begins. You can then use the cradle to work towards the back, all while he is being squeezed the whole time.

The Knee Shield can be a tricky guard to work against. It gives the bottom player a strong frame, allowing them to manage distance very well.

The Sprawl Pass is meant to crush the knee shield. Your sprawl will minimize the defense the knee shield provides, allowing you to pass by circling over towards his head, or jumping to the back. It also provides a lot of options such as cradles, eagle claws, and more.

I have faced a lot of world class competitors over the years, and Robert Drysdale certainly is at the top of that list of the best of the best.

As one of the few Americans to win the IBJJF Mundials as a black belt, ADCC 2007 Absolute Champion, and undefeated MMA fighter – Robert has competed at the apex of the sport and coached many people to that level.

Cradles?

In wrestling the Cradle is a powerful pinning technique that can also be used to score take downs. In BJJ and MMA, it has not really been utilized. I myself have often played around with them for BJJ, but Robert has taken it to another level to develop a step-by-step passing sequence to crush the half guard player.

So now that I got your attention – you ready to learn how to pass the half guard with the cradle? The first step is to use the sprawl break, which will open up the half guard and put you in side control. Check it out and see more at http://bjjcradle.com
