In today’s video Josh McKinney shows a nasty straight ankle lock from K guard. If you watch our rolling that we did in the Vlog of the seminar at his gym you’ll see him use the technique he’s using in this video.

Even if you’re not the biggest leg lock person. The details for control and off-balancing the person with open guard is super useful. Also, he shows some great details on finishing the straight ankle lock in some different ways. Some of the adjustments he showed made the ankle lock get tight quick!

This is a lock I learned a LONG time ago and I’ve been shown some great variations of it over the years from some awesome martial artists such as Adlai Cleveland, Scott Elliot, and even the brilliant John Danaher included it on his leg lock set.

Currently, this is my finishing mechanic and it’s probably the leg lock I get the most often in training. I’m using it from both the 50/50 position and the Honey Hole. Well, we call it the Honey Hole at 10th Planet Decatur. Everyone seems to have a different name for it. Saddle. 411. Cross Ashi. Inside Senkaku. Call it what you want. I call it the honey hole.

As far as damage to the opponent goes, the inside heel hook is gonna be a much more devastating lock. But if you need a tap and maybe a break on the foot, this variation of the Straight Ankle Lock is gonna be there for you.

I have been using the Cross Guard since purple belt and it has always been in my opinion one of the most dynamic guards. It opens up options for both submissions and sweeps. Allows for triangle chokes, armbars, omoplatas, ankle locks, matrix set ups, berimbolo set ups, and transitions to X Guard. I think it is easy to set up for beginners from closed guard as well as accessible in many situation even at a top level. This video is from my last seminar where I show how to apply an ankle lock. The Straight Ankle Lock is one of the most effective leg locks in gi Jiu Jitsu. Last weekend at worlds it was used in many matches including the final match in rolsterweight with Mikey Musumeci scoring a 12 second submission win. I explain concepts in this video for how I Lock the foot into position along my rib cage and the mechanics for a strong finish. This is my favorite leglock in BJJ right now.
