Self Defense training is far more than just a series of headlock escapes. This is where many schools fail their students by not giving them the training in the non-technique aspects of a conflict – the ones that actually teach any Self Defense, that is.

One of the other big fallacies in most Martial Arts Self Defense training is that fights start at full aggression.

There is often a build up of aggression and to be effective in staying safe, you need to know how to manage the aggression (both verbally and physically) while attempting to de-escalate it.

This means understanding ranges and how they must be managed, as well as angles (two of the four things I always teach to control in any conflict).

If you like my particular focus and style of teaching, you can get this kind of instruction almost daily for only $10/Month.

Situational awareness can fail. It’s something we all obviously need to practice and prioritize, but for many reasons it can fail. So it’s crucial that we have the ability and technical training to get us to a safe position in dangerous conditions. This particular instance we are focused on in this video centers around how to get back to your feet safely at various levels of lateness in recognizing the threat of a standing aggressor.
•
Anya and I explore three different ways to safely and technical stand up versus a standing opponent. Each of these options work in sportive, as well as self defense environments with slight modifications. These are all able to be drilled with intensity, and safely should be for any hope of developing proficiency.

The guillotine choke is an extremely dangerous move that people are factory installed with. It is in the same family as the headlock, but because it has more of a tendency to be an actual choke, it is urgent that you defend it intelligently and immediately.

This video is in a series I will be doing in collaboration with The Budo Brothers. They are a great group of martial artists interested in promoting positivity in the community and helping kids get to train, who otherwise wouldn’t have the opportunity. Check them out!
This is the first in a series I filmed with my good friends JD Caputo and Coty Kellison, looking at offensive use of the clothing for chokes in both a training environment and street environment. There is a lot of potential for this, and here is one of my favorites with the jacket, referred to as the Gerbi choke. It is so named after an Israeli Judoka who has hit this multiple times at the highest levels of competition. Please let me know what you think, like and share.
