Recently the Ole Chewster has had some health issues….

With that being said, it’s forced me to take some time off the BJJ mats from hard rolling. And so with that I’ve decided to spend more time in other areas like the gym, specifically with stretching and mobility.

Lots of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners are extremely tight, that includes me. Personally, I have struggled with flexibility my entire life. I’ve never been a flexible guy. And with years of hard training and a few surgeries. My body has some issues.

That said I’ve been correcting some of these issues with a stretching and mobility program I had created for me. In the video I’ll share some of the movements that have helped me out. The stretches and exercises today are focused on knees, hips and ankles.

If you’re struggling with a similar issue, then hopefully these ideas can be useful to you.

Just remember, I am not a doctor, nor am I giving you any medical advice. I’m just showing you what has been working for me.

Go see a professional if you are having any issues.

These are some of the exercises I like to do after training. Longer hold times after training is helpful to relax the muscles and good for recovery. Focus on breathing throughout the exercises to get into a comfortable stretch and make sure not to go into pain.

I wanted to share the idea of “joint gapping.” It’s a simple way to create more space in a stiff or tight joint to help with movement.

Essentially, you can use a towel or another object to act as a fulcrum to create a gapping or spacing in the joint.

When a joint is stiff, specifically a “hinge joint” (think of a hinge on the door-opening and closing) such as the elbow and knee, you can see how placing a towel between the joint were the joint bends can create a fulcrum and a gapping to make space.

So if you’re dealing with an elbow injury or a stiff elbow joint, check out the Grappling RX – Elbow Rehab Course to get a step-by-step proven approach to mobility, strength, and return to sport.
https://www.thejiujitsutherapist.com/sales-page

And if you’re dealing with some stiff knees, and having problems sitting back on the heels, then Grappling RX – How To Sit Back On The Heels will be the perfect course to improve your kneeling position and improving your base for BJJ (which will make you more stable and more difficult to sweep).

Today’s video is a series of stretches I like using after BJJ training to help improve recovery from hard rolling sessions and improve guard retention abilities.

I started doing these back in 2020 to loosen up my hips while I had some free time away from the gym. I’m a person who’s not the most flexible. And by doing these stretches on a regular basis I found my hips became more flexible, my guard retention improved and I believe they help with my recovery after training.

I’m sharing them with you because I find a lot of people who come in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes have super tight hips. Tight hips are a problem in BJJ for a lot of reasons. And being effective off of your back is one of them.

So in the video I’ll show you the stretches and explain why I use them during.

Hope the video and the stretches help you!

The hip flexors are a muscle group that can get overworked and can be notoriously tight and painful in jiu-jitsu practitioners and in anyone that sits a lot throughout the day.

There are numerous ways to stretch the hip flexors, and this technique uses the extension of the hip by using the foam roller to stretch the hip flexor instead of the traditional lunge technique where the leg is stationary and the body lunges forward.

This is just a different way to elicit a stretch than the traditional means of stretching the hip flexor. This technique also requires increased control of the hip and leg to provide a comfortable and appropriate stretch.

I’m always trying to learn and explore new ways to get the most out of my body and to help preserve the body to allow for high level function and performance.
