I recently got a good question about how to develop the “If this, then that’ mentality and approach that many high level BJJ practitioners have with their styles. So, in the video I’ll give you some ideas to chew on about how to develop your own style and reach a relative level of competence or mastery with the positions or techniques in that style.

The ideas are very simple. But simple doesn’t mean they don’t work. After 23 years of grappling, it’s usually the simplest stuff that makes the biggest difference.

So hopefully if you have this kind of question for your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu then I hope this video is useful to you!

Thanks for watching.

Today’s video is a reply to a comment I received about rolling with people in BJJ who are working around injuries.

True story, some of my best BJJ techniques have come from relaxed rolling with injured training partners. Seems crazy right? In the video I share a great example from 2019 that helped me be a more effective grappler and even win a gold medal at a competition because of a specific grip I learned during an injured roll.

I also talk about why this is kind of a secret to training as a an older Black Belt.

Hopefully the idea I share in the video serves you well if you or 1 of your training partners is trying to train around a particular injury in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Chat with you next time.

Ever struggle with remembering Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques? If you’re like most of us, then I’m sure you have. Especially early on. And this is the main topic for today’s question that comes from Sarah who’s a White Belt and can’t seem to remember all the techniques from her BJJ Classes.

So, in the video I share some ideas on why not being able to retain each technique you learn is normal and why it’s not even necessary for being good at BJJ. Sure, overtime you’ll remember more and more of them. But it’s not like forgetting a couple of techniques you don’t use will break your ability to be a good BJJ practitioner. In particular I share a story from my high school wrestling days that illustrates why, and why I never got too worried when I didn’t remember each technique when I was coming up.

Hope the video is useful to you!

In today’s video I answer a question from a BJJ practitioner who said they’re telegraphing their techniques. If you’re unfamiliar with this term it basically means his partners and opponents see the techniques coming a mile away.

So in his message he’s curious about how to address this issue so that he can get back to successfully using his techniques in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

In the video I’ll share 3 things to consider when you run into a situation where your bread and butter techniques aren’t working anymore.

The 3 things that I bring up in the video to consider are. . .
1. Speed of execution

2. Confidence

3. Grips

I also share ways to build these up. And while I’m sure I missed some things that could be important, these 3 areas are a good starting point if you’re trying to increase the effectiveness with your techniques.

Oh and if you like the shirt I’m wearing check out https://epicrollbjj.com/ and use promo code Chewjitsu for 15% off.

Hope you enjoyed the video.

Today’s Q&A Chewy Ramble video I answer a question from a Purple Belt named Nick who’s moving into the role as an assistant coach. He says his game is focused on sweeping but he knows he needs to teach other things to his students so they can progress.

So his question to me is about how to teach moves you’re uncomfortable with as a new Brazilian Jiu-jitsu coach.

In this video I give some ideas as to how I teach and how I taught as a new BJJ coach. How I show techniques I’m not the best with but how they’re still useful to the students. I also talk about the ideas and usefulness of having a rotating curriculum as well as some general philosophies on being a coach in Jiu-jitsu.
