This tip is absolutely crucial to finishing a tough opponent.

Not everyone is going to just give you a tap as soon as you lock something in. It takes a consistent squeeze to put someone away. I’ve been teaching for years now and this is one of the biggest problems I see with inexperienced grapplers.

You will see/feel them squeeze really hard for three seconds or so than they release the pressure. Than they squeeze again and repeat the cycle until they are gassed out.

Be sure to keep this tip in mind while attacking your chokes.

In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu there are certain parts of training which require a good deal of conscious effort.

A couple of these aspects of training are drilling and getting in reps, and changing the stories we tell about ourselves on the mat.

We often accept certain traits we have as an almost permanent condition.

Like the question I received from the person in the video. Which is he thinks he gets his Guard passed easily during rolling. And approaches his training with that mentality.

Changing your mindset for BJJ is tough. Because you are often fighting your inner critic which has a propensity to pop up during difficult times on the mat.

As I describe in the video. I had a lot of difficulty not getting my Guard passed as well. And one of the biggest things that helped me over come this issue was changing my mindset.

Along with that, forcing myself to play from the positions that bothered me the most. So I have more time in the position to work.

So if you’re experiencing any trouble with any position. Here is what I would advise you to do.

1. Drill techniques from the BJJ position that is frustrating.

2. Change your mindset with the position. Positive self talk is powerful and will help make the reality you seek happen.

3. Work from that area. Conquer the frustration or fear by moving towards it.

Remember, the beautiful part about BJJ is that your skills and abilities are not permanent. They’re always growing and shifting.

And you have a hand in this!

Do you ever panic when you’re stuck in the bottom of side control? This is the issue that Bob is having.

Bob says he is the smallest person in his gym and gets stuck in the bottom of side control. And while he knows techniques to escape, he panics and cannot seem to recall the techniques because he panics.

His question is how to address this issue during his Brazilian Jiujitsu training.

In this video I discuss a couple of simple ideas and a tip to work on getting away from the panic mindset that often grips people when they are still new to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

The tip is pretty simple but will take a good deal of discipline to use it effectively.

The tip is to roll with some of your partners, and essentially let them pass and put you in a bad position like the bottom of side control. And once they are there. . . don’t try to escape.

Instead. . .

Just stay tight and don’t let them submit you. And see how long you can last. The purpose of doing this is that it will give you more time in the position. And more time in the position equals more comfort and less panic.

Once you get comfortable in bad spots, it makes it easier to relax, not panic, and use your techniques more effectively and efficiently.

I also discuss how I used this in my own training as well as how I’ve used this with my BJJ students to get them to be more effective with their escapes.

I hope this BJJ escape tip helps with your side control escapes!
