<p>Recently 1 of my smaller BJJ students was asking questions about how to add top pressure in Side Control. So, I gave them a few tips that helped them out and I figured I&#8217;d share them with you. </p>
<p>As a smaller person in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu you can certainly add top pressure. But you&#8217;ve got to me more deliberate than say a 300lbs person who can have sloppy positioning but still feel like a ton of bricks. And the video will give you some ideas on how to do that.</p>
<p>That said, all of the stuff that I talk about in the video is perfectly useable for a bigger person too. They&#8217;re sound fundamentals. But again, if you want to have strong pressure on top of side control and don&#8217;t want to get rolled, then they&#8217;re even more important if you&#8217;re not a massive person. </p>

<p>Today&#8217;s BJJ technique video is a continuation of the passing idea I shared last week about using half guard to slow down younger, faster or more athletic opponents. </p>
<p>In today&#8217;s video I answer a question about the Reverse Half Guard position as a question came up on the original video. I show some details on how to use the Reverse Half Guard position in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, so you don&#8217;t get reverse or lose control of your opponent. But also, how to strategically place your weight on your opponent to apply maximum pressure.</p>
<p>This can be a great position whether you&#8217;re older and need to slow down the young whipper snappers  in your class or if you just run into someone who has a really mobile guard. </p>
<p>If you&#8217;re trying to figure out ways to slow down training partners or opponents with guard passing then I hope this video is useful to you!<br />

<p>Adding more top pressure in BJJ is something everyone wants to do, right? So, in this video I&#8217;m going to show a simple way to do it. When I watch some of my less experienced Brazilian Jiu-jitsu students in top positions, I notice they sometimes don&#8217;t maximize their bodyweight. Meaning, they have a lot of weight pressed into the mat and not the person their rolling with. And in some cases their weight isn&#8217;t placed in the most ideal spot to restrict the breathing of their opponent. </p>
<p>So, in this video I&#8217;ll share some details with you on how to make the most of your bodyweight and add some crushing top pressure in positions like mount and side control. The tip is ultra-simple, but when applied is super-effective. </p>
<p>This tip is also coming about because I&#8217;m in the process of changing up my game a bit to be a bit more slower and tighter. As a fella who&#8217;s getting closer to 40 I&#8217;m realizing I&#8217;ve gotta slow my game down just a hair to be more competitive with younger guys instead of getting into all out scrambles and being movement focused like I used to be. </p>

<p>One thing almost everyone wants to do in BJJ is add more top pressure to Side Control and Mount positions. I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve know the saying &#8220;position before submission&#8221; and you&#8217;ll also learn (if you don&#8217;t already know) that the better you hold position the easier the submission comes. So adding a extra pressure from top is not only important for control it&#8217;s also crucial for your submission game. </p>
<p>In this video I answer a question from someone who says their coach tells them to, &#8220;Add more top pressure to make the bottom person uncomfortable.&#8221; But he&#8217;s curious, how do you add more top pressure in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. </p>
<p>So in this video I share a tip that&#8217;s been useful to me. And to be honest I didn&#8217;t really absorb this lesson till I was probably a Black Belt. So if you get it sooner than me, you&#8217;re off to a better start than I was. </p>
<p>The Brazilian Jiujitsu lesson is really simple. It involves being aware of your bodily positioning. Sounds easy, but often there are a lot of moving parts to each position and the actual connection to the other persons body happens without much conscious thought. </p>
<p>So if you&#8217;re wanting to add more pressure to BJJ positions from top then I hope this video is useful to you in your BJJ training or competitions in the future.<br />

<p>Recently I competed at the IBJJF 2019 Summer Chicago Open tournament. During this BJJ competition I was able to hit several of the techniques I teach through my Youtube videos and in my gym. </p>
<p>During the highlight video you’ll see a mixture of guard passing, top pressure and takedowns where I was able to win triple gold at the BJJ tournament. The medals were 1 gold in my weight class (gi) then gold in my weight class (no gi) and I won the open class (no gi). </p>
<p>These matches took place in the Masters 1 division. </p>
<p>If you’re not familiar with what Masters divisions are in Brazilian Jiujitsu. They’re divisions for us “old” guys. Haha. </p>
<p>Truth be told I still compete against younger guys in various tournaments but I prefer the shorter match times of 6 minutes. This match duration allows me to play aggressively without worrying about running out of steam. </p>
<p>Enjoy the video and I just want to say thanks again to all of you who showed your support during the competition. </p>

<p>So in this video I share a couple of tips on developing better top pressure and positioning from top.</p>
<p>The 1st tip is about changing your mindset with the BJJ techniques that you&#8217;re trying to execute.</p>
<p>In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu if you&#8217;re comfortable with a particular position like Guard or fighting from the back.</p>
<p>You may find that you will give up top position because you&#8217;re perfectly fine with dropping back to Guard to work from bottom.</p>
<p>If this is the cause. You will have to approach your rolls during a Brazilian Jiujitsu practice with a different mindset. A mindset of being a tough top player who doesn&#8217;t give up top position.</p>
<p>The second part of the video gives a couple of basic tips and principles from Side Control on putting yourself into a heavy and properly aligned angle on top.</p>
<p>Things like blocking the hip in side control, not crossing the centerline of the person&#8217;s body and keeping your hips tight will all help in developing a strong top position.</p>
