Butterfly guard has the potential to be the best position to initiate sweeps, and it also a potentially target rich environment for setting up submissions and transitioning to other threatening positions. That’s the theme of this video. In this one, I show some options of what we can do from butterfly in order to attack the arms, transition into arm saddle, and attack the legs or take the back from X-Guard, all initiated from butterfly. The arm crunch, or ude gatame if you like the Japanese words, is an extremely useful, quick and deceptive submission in its own right. However, it can also be used to set up great opportunities for sweeps and transitions to other submissions, as well. In this video, I show the fundamental mechanics of the arm crunch, as well as using it for the following purposes:

– Hiza Gatame from Butterfly Guard
– Triangle Choke (Sankaku Jime) Transition
– Sumi Gaeshi Sweep from Butterfly
– Heel Hook from Backside 50/50 Set Up
– Application from Kesa Gatame

DOUBLE TROUBLE TRIANGLE TRAP ARMLOCK

This video shows some Double Trouble Triangle Trap Armlock situations. We are doing some “reverse engineering” and working on different variations of this situation. Mike Pennington brought in an old catch wrestling photo showing what appears to be a rather painful finishing hold and we had a lot of fun parsing it out and figuring out how it works and how to set an opponent up for it-as well as how to make it a practical move.
