Got a lifting question from a viewer recently who asks,

“What’s the best type of lifting for BJJ?”

Now he went on in the message to ask about different modalities of lifting like crossfit, powerlifting and so on. So in the video I share my experiences with everything from crossfit to powerlifting to bodybuilding style workouts and what I prefer now.

Keep in mind that in the video I’m going off my experiences as someone who’s been lifting since he was a teenager. Also, my purposes for lifting as a 37 year old guy are different now than they were when I was a younger competitor. Nowadays it’s for injury prevention and also a little of aesthetics. I share this because this isn’t to say that my answer is right, it’s simply a piece of advice to take in and consider for your own training.

But either way, I hope the video is useful to you if lifting and BJJ is a question you might have.

This morning 1 of my White Belts was coming back from an injury and had a question for me. Here’s what happened.

He was doing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and then added weight training on top of it. He was enjoying clanging and banging so he cranked it up to 5 days of heavy lifting a week. Soon after he ran into some nasty tendinitis in his arms and had to take a couple of weeks off from training all together.

No BJJ or weight training.

Now that he’s healthy again he wants to add lifting back in. But he asked yours bearded for a wee bit-O-guidance. And so I’ll share with you what I shared with him.

The big mistake he made was by not focusing one 1 of the MOST important parts of training.

The routine!

See, he went hard. But lifting (like BJJ) only blesses you with its benefits after a long period of consistency. And so when you add in lifting you need to set a schedule and then eaaaasssseee into the intensity over a period of time. This gives your bucket of bones time to acclimate and gives you time to set a routine.

1 of the keys to surviving for the long haul in BJJ, the weight room, your diet. . . anything that’s worthwhile really. Is long term consistency.

And a routine that’s been executed to the point of making it habitual is the often-ignored backbone of that.

So hopefully that’s helpful to you.

Should do you BJJ before you lift weights? That’s a question I get a lot from people who watch the channel.

In this video I share a Friday session we had at the gym. It started off with BJJ and then Joe myself and a couple of the guys went over to do a lift.

I already knew what was going to happen. I was going to be weaker.

Along with making the muscles looser which is not optimal for strength or safety when lifting. It also depletes a lot of the materials your body uses for muscle performance.

During the weight training session I share a supplement Joe and I use after really tough training sessions, especially if we have to train again soon.

And we also answer some questions from my Friday Instagram Q&A. We got a little silly with some of the cussing so if that bothers you, then you may not want to watch.

But all in all, I wouldn’t recommend doing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu before lifting.

And if you’re wondering what I typically do. I try to seperate them by several hours. Always doing lifting 1st if possible.

Hope you enjoy the video!

You can check out Joe’s videos here:
https://www.youtube.com/user/Unriavledfitness

Oh and by the way. If you ever visit us in Louisville, KY. Along with Brazilian Jiujitsu we have a great weight training facility that focuses on strength training and olympic lifting.

So if you want to throw some metal around Join us!

Strength training for BJJ is something I get lots of questions about.

I have a hunch this is because my meathead-ness is expressed often in BJJ.

One exercise that is excellent but at the same time can be a bit of a bugger for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioner is the Squat.

The Squat is such a strong exercise for the whole body with endless variations.

One reason the Squat is so problematic for people who do BJJ is their hip tightness. This is caused by the constant flexion on the mat and the inconsistency with stretching to loosen and exercises to strengthen extension.

In this video I share a great piece of equipment the Belt Squat machine. This is the type of squat I like to do and it’s easy on the lower back.

There are a number of different ways details and benefits I share in the video. But if you’re a BJJ athlete or practitioner who wants to build stronger legs but avoids the traditional back squat because of pain in the lower back.

I’d simply invite you to try this exercise if you can. I’ve found with a number of our members in my gym that they’ve been able to use it with no issues whatsoever and have received an overall strength benefit.

This allows them to get stronger and still be ready for their BJJ training.

Hope this video was helpful!

In this video my buddy Joe and I got a lift in on a Monday morning.

Here’s Joe’s Youtube if you want to learn more: https://www.youtube.com/user/Unriavledfitness

Before the lift started I threw up a story on Instagram and asked for questions regarding weight training for BJJ.

If you have no muscle, is it better to do low reps high weight or high weight low reps in the beginning?

Do you do any grip strength training for no gi?

How should you split of weight training , BJJ and possibly muay thai training?

You’ll also notice that I am not going incredibly heavy. And honestly this is mostly the case with my lifting. I rarely go SUPER heavy in the gym.

As I’ve figured out over the years. Only so much of that is going to find it’s way to the way to the mats when I’m doing Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

Along with all of this you’ll hear us talk about whatever we are planning to talk about. As well as a few nuggets of information about strength training in relation to BJJ.

Talk to you guys next time!

I figured it was about time to start doing some weight training for BJJ videos.

In this video I share one of the deadlift variations I really like. It’s the Hex Bar Deadlift sometimes called a Trap Bar Deadlift.

There are a few reasons I like this weight lifting exercises for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu players.

1. It’s a great lift for the whole body!

2. Requires less technical skill than a squat or conventional deadlift. (great for new lifters)

3. Easier on the lower back than a Deadlift or a Squat.

4. Helps facilitate good hip extension which is an area BJJ practitioners lack.

5. It’s also a very natural movement. Many BJJ practitioners suffer from muscular imbalances and have trouble squatting and deadlifting with good form. Because of the natural movement of the Hex Bar Deadlift. It’s a great option in an easier movement pattern.

I’ve personally grown to love this lift. Years ago, I wasn’t really a fan. But as I began to play around with it. I noticed the utility for me as a Brazilian Jiujitsu practitioner.

Mainly, I could hit my legs and work my lower body without the fatigue that would often be caused by squats or traditional deadlifts.

I also noticed that these feel much more comfortable and I recover a bit faster from them.

If you’re looking for a good exercise to boost your BJJ. It’s a smart idea to strengthen the lower body. And this is a great exercise to work into the mix.
