When an edged weapon is introduced in close quarters, the longer the fight goes, the more likely you will get cut regardless of whether you are on top or bottom. We used a @nltsirt training knife and once @dylan_2na brought it out of his waistband I used a push/pull with my left hand and shin to manage the distance from the bottom. The #graciesurvivaltactics course calls that the 1.5, which is typically for setting up triangles. There’s a possible Kimura opportunity that I didn’t try too but what is interesting to me (because it happened more than once) was that when my right hand stopped controlling Dylan’s posture and transitioned to unholster, that was what allowed him to gain posture/distance, switch hands and start stabbing me. What a dilemma! Stay in the mix longer and increase the likelihood of getting cut, or unholster right away and possibly trade cuts for shots. Not good! This is one reason why some officers carry individual first aide kits (IFAK) like our brothers and sisters in our country’s armed forces. I probably would’ve had a few sucking chest wounds.

Even when I was on top in Dylan’s half guard, you can see the potential for getting stabbed is basically identical. Generally speaking, disengagement and creating distance to access your tools as soon as possible seems like the best. I stayed in the mix longer and was very lucky to get the disarm.

The dilemma that edged weapons in close quarters presents is that even if you are armed, you cannot access your pistol/knife/impact tool without compromising your control (presuming you have any) of the edged weapon. Same thing goes for trying to gouge the eyes or some other dirty fighting tactic. Can’t do that and have good control of the knife simultaneously. I’m going to try this with a shock knife soon, which I’m sure will be a very pleasant experience. Everything works and everything fails. Mahalo to Dylan for helping me. 🙏🏽🤙🏽 #police #training #jiujitsu #trainweeklyorfightweakly #aiea #oahugrown
