I had the great pleasure of speaking with Abdel. I first met him when he was entering high school. At that time he had just moved to our country from Egypt and he was still learning English. Now he is earning college credit in a “running start” program and is also working part time. He hopes to one day work in dentistry and I have no doubt he will succeed. He told me in Egypt getting a good education was a privilege that only wealthy families had because it was so expensive. Abdel said when he was in middle school there were students in his ESL class from all over the world, and that their families all had coming to America to make a better life for themselves in common. I had a great time catching up with him and we discussed how he has tried to take advantage of the opportunities that our country provides to those who have the motivation and discipline to make it happen.
