I’m very #thankful to be working for a progressive department that provides training acquired from a variety of sources. I recently received a message from an officer in another state who asked me how we incorporated #jiujitsu into our DT curriculum. He asked this because he said his department is “anti-bjj.” While there is no such thing as a perfect police department, I can say that Bellevue PD’s Defensive Tactics curriculum is very progressive and takes things from several sources and a variety of arts to help keep its officers safe. Some techniques are from #jiujitsu, some from #muaythai,some from #boxing, #kali, etc. Through training and networking with other LEO’s across the world at courses like the #graciesurvivaltactics at @gracieuniversityhq I’ve found that what is taught in each department is almost entirely dependent upon the department’s training coordinator and administration. If you are thinking about a career in law enforcement, one of the factors to consider when choosing who to apply for (at least for me) would be where their DT curriculum comes from, and how often do officers get to train in it. #Respect to @tcoyne18, one of our new hires who recently started his journey. He helped me practice and demonstrate some techniques from the #GST curriculum (clinch, leg hook takedown, knee on belly, Kimura handcuffing transition). I like to feel how the gear can limit certain movements like torso and hip flexion in training so there are less surprises when I do it for real.
