Jiu Jitsu consists in a series of concepts that can be adapted to different fighting scenarios, and to everyday life too. I believe that a beginner should start to explore these concepts starting from self defence scenarios for two main reasons. The first one is that ninety percent of beginners start to learn Jiu Jitsu to develop greater skills and confidence in a potentially dangerous situation. The second reason is that self defence scenarios can be easily understood from anyone. Once these concepts are understood, it is going to be easier for the beginner student to translate them in a sports context.
In this short video you can see how simple self defence techniques can be a great tool to understand the mechanics of a couple of competition throws consisting of tani-otoshi variations. The mechanics and the concepts are pretty much the same. Jiu Jitsu is One. Never forget that. Have a good day everyone. OSU.
