guard has always been one of the most challenging scenarios to learn in jiu jitsu. the desire to learn advanced attacks that will take you to the back or finish the fight makes the majority of the students to skip the learning process of what should be priority – the core of the guard, the concepts on how to manage the distance, stay safe with a strong frame and have understanding of where you are and what are the possibilities there.

near, middle and far distance are completely different scenarios and require a lot of understanding if you want to be effective from the bottom. submissions happen in near distance where you have a hold of the opponents body and enough leverage to use your whole body to maximize the strength of the move. middle distance has the most technical set of combinations for sweeps and back attacks since you can control your opponents legs but still have space to move your hips, creating multiple off balance scenarios that will result in technical attacks.

and far distance is used to start a sequence when you pull guard or to reset your guard when the opponent is closing the space from the top, understanding that distance will make you become not only good attacking but readjusting your guard whenever you are being attacked.
