O-Guruma can be one of the most difficult throws to master in Judo.

O-Guruma can be one of the most difficult throws to master in Judo. It requires precise positioning, pulls, and timing. To the casual observer, the throw is often confused with Harai-Gosh or Ashi-Guruma, but both of those throws differ considerably in positioning and leg placement. For example, in right Ashi-Guruma, Tori blocks Uke’s knee with his own right leg, but in O-Guruma, Tori blocks Uke’s hips–causing Uke to wheel over Tori’s straight leg. Tori’s blocking leg should be straight and stiff, and Uke should rotate vertically over that outstretched leg before hitting the ground.
