Sneaky Americana from common Arm-triangle (Kata Gatame) defense.
.
I’ve added a small detail about the way I like to pass from one side to the other, while trying to go for the Arm triangle. If the opponent knows what’s up, he knows that if you grab this kind of grip, you’ll probably try to hop over to the other side to finish the choke. He will try to prevent it, and even catch one of your legs during the transition, getting you into a half guard – which is much harder to pass.
I like to slide my knee over his belly, and before I pass, I secure his legs with my other leg. I do some sort of a backstep motion whilst hooking his far leg and pushing it off to the other side, while I slide my first leg out of the way.
Very stable and makes it hard for him to catch my legs while I try to transition (both of my hands are occupied with the grip for the choke, so it’s hard to allocate my hands to help me with the pass to the other side).
.
In the final position, one of the common defenses is putting the hand next to the ear, pushing the elbow out and creating some space between the shoulder and the neck, to make the choke harder (because in Arm triangle, the main choking hand is his hand, the one I push with my chest right in to his aorta).
This defense doesn’t always work, but against someone who isn’t perfect with the Arm triangle, it can really make the choke a lot harder. So there is a sneaky Americana there. The opponent leaves it right there to catch. The Americana is a bit different from the regular mounted Americana. Here I pull the wrist and push the elbow. Try not to get your neck in the way of his forearm that you are trying to pull, you’ll pull into your head and it’ll make it harder and less effective. Try to lower your neck to his bicep area. If he extends his arm to try to defend the Americana, you just push his arm to the other side and come back to the choke.
