Got a lifting question from a viewer recently who asks,

“What’s the best type of lifting for BJJ?”

Now he went on in the message to ask about different modalities of lifting like crossfit, powerlifting and so on. So in the video I share my experiences with everything from crossfit to powerlifting to bodybuilding style workouts and what I prefer now.

Keep in mind that in the video I’m going off my experiences as someone who’s been lifting since he was a teenager. Also, my purposes for lifting as a 37 year old guy are different now than they were when I was a younger competitor. Nowadays it’s for injury prevention and also a little of aesthetics. I share this because this isn’t to say that my answer is right, it’s simply a piece of advice to take in and consider for your own training.

But either way, I hope the video is useful to you if lifting and BJJ is a question you might have.

In today’s video I share a quick story from a BJJ training session with a Crossfit athlete who was also a college wrestler, and has also did some Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Because of his wrestling base he definitely gave me a unique look and shut down my Half Guard game. Every time I’d come up for a sweep I just couldn’t quite finish it. Instead I had to switch up to Butterfly Guard to get a sweep.

I share this with you because the problem solving mindset I have when I train with people like that is not the one I’ve always had. And if you’re a BJJ practitioner yourself you definitely need to maintain that mindset, especially against people with certain attributes that give you trouble.

Here’s his instagram page in case you want to check him out: https://www.instagram.com/blacksmifff/

I say this because all to often I hear BJJ players make excuses as to why something doesn’t work like, “Oh they’re just strong.” You don’t want to be one of these people.

I also give you an update on how my weight loss is going. Currently I’m down to about 200-202 in the morning and have lost around 10lbs and it’s steadily declining. More on that to come.

Hope you enjoyed the video.

Is foam rolling good for recovery?

In my opinion, yes.

But foam rolling works differently than you think.

Foam rolling is effective on a neurological level where the pressure on your muscles gives your brain feedback to release the restricted area.

There is also a component of bringing blood flow to the area you are foam rolling, With blood flow you get oxygen and nutrition to your muscle which will essentiallly assist with recovery.

Most people agree that foam rolling is a better technique for after activity as a recovery tool. I personally have found benefit to foam rolling before and after BJJ or training as I feel the aspect of increased blood flow helps my muscles get warmed up and also the neurological component of foam rolling helps with the recovery and keeping my muscles from getting as tight after training.

Try it out and see what works for you, but keep in mind that foam rolling is a useful tool in addition to a complete recovery program.

The D-Ball (Dead Ball) Clean is a variation on the Power Clean.
Using the D-ball allows for working on grip, power, and explosiveness, which are all great for BJJ and is easier to learn than the power clean.

The D-Ball (Dead Ball) Clean is an exercise I was taught by Grindhouse Crossfit head coach Joe Clark. He is a a Crossfit coach, powerlifter, and expert in strength and conditioning. Joe helped me out with instruction and technique with using a D-ball to show how this variation will help BJJ practitioners get that extra edge in training and competition.

Building strength, power, expolisveness, and cardiovascular endurance will be the difference when competing against an opponent with the same or similar skill level as you. Also, strength and conditioning is a critical portion of being healthy and injury-free.

Check out Joe’s Instagram at @averagejoec and his youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/JoeClark13.

Achilles tendonitis, calf, and heel pain can really limit your function and ability to perform a deep squat while exercising or even get into proper position in BJJ such as being on active toes when in an opponent’s guard. This exercise using an eccentric contraction (“negatives”) to not only actively stretch the calf and foot, but to also strengthen the calf muscle in a pain-free way can really be effective.
