This is some video footage of when Nick Albin, aka Chewy from @chewjitsu and I had a chance to train together. We got to exchange ideas, explore technical considerations and roll around a little bit.
•
This flow roll allows us the pace to work through positions and submission opportunities without trying to maul each other and to move at a learning speed. Also, I want everyone to understand that I realize Chewy was being very nice to me and not gunning for so many opportunities he had to catch me. But this roll wasn’t about that for either of us, which immediately earned my respect for him on a whole new level. He is a fantastic dude that I truly can’t say enough good about.

Leading up the Cincinatti Open several weeks ago. Chad and I did a light rolling, drilling session.

During the session we started with a bit of Flow Rolling to get warmed up and moving. Then we progressed to BJJ drilling combined with Regular Full Rolls but at about 60%.

This BJJ training session was enough to get a sweat in and help sharpen my techniques leading up for the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournament.

But at the same time, not enough to wear me out where I would not be able to perform well that weekend.

I personally do not train incredibly hard leading up to a competitions or tournament in Brazilian Jiujitsu. I try to continue to move but at the same time, let me heal up for the upcoming match.

During the session we also answered a few BJJ related questions and we even included a few of our Kids BJJ students at the end.

This video will give you a view of us just rolling around and goofing off at times.

Notice the flow rolling in the beginning? We started off with a slow roll and then picked it up and got after it.

This was from a recent BJJ training session I had with my buddy John Salter down at Guardian MMA as he was preparing for the ADCC and his upcoming fights in Bellator.

John is one of the toughest dudes I’ve ever tried to takedown, pin down or just roll with in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.

He’s fast, strong and has a great blend of wrestling to compliment his BJJ and his MMA that he uses in Bellator and MMA fights.

He and I also play a lot of the same positions in BJJ. If you watch the highlight video you’ll see both of us using half guard positions and lots of head control.

I hope you enjoy the video of us rolling!

If you arrive late to BJJ class and want to get warmed up quickly, then flow rolling is a great technique to try.
Its a useful way to get your body and mind tuned in and ready for BJJ. Building muscle memory, getting your tissue warmed up, and also going at a slower pace will open up and show you new things that you may have missed during a regular rolling session.
As always, listen to your body to ensure you are properly warmed up and choose a training partner who you are comfortable with.
