Some of jiu-jitsu’s stars have interesting nicknames such as Buchecha, which means fat cheeks (due to being overweight) and Preguica, meaning sloth or lazy. In the case of Luis “Limao” Heredia, he was given his nickname by a friend who saw Luis kiss a girl and she (allegedly) made a face like she had just tasted a sour lemon. With friends like these, who needs enemies. (LOL *kidding*)

As a true pioneer in the sport, Luis has seen it all in terms of the rise of jiu-jitsu; especially of that within the United States. Four years before America really saw what jiu-jitsu was thanks to Royce Gracie’s involvement in UFC 1, Luis traveled here alongside the Gracies to set up shop in Los Angeles, CA and never look back. He has trained alongside many great practitioners as well as MMA fighters. Eventually Luis felt he needed a change of scenery and now runs an amazing academy in Maui, HI. You can find out more information about him and his academy at https://www.mauijiujitsu.com, as well as like it on Facebook under Maui Jiu-Jitsu Academy.

In this video Luis demonstrates counters to your opponents own counters when unable to get the single leg and then miss the inside trip, but finish with an ankle pick. Assisting him with the demonstration is Stefan Kocev.

For more information on Luis Heredia, a break down of this move and others he demonstrates, more great techniques from other high level practitioners, news, product reviews, nutritional advice, conditioning programs, supplements information, and more check out issue #30 of Jiu-Jitsu Magazine.
Most of us found out about jiu-jitsu by watching a young, lanky, expressionless Brazilian named Royce Gracie somehow defeat opponents using little movements we couldn’t comprehend via a VHS cassette. This is typical in the US; however, jiu-jitsu was already seeded for years in Brazil, so it was interesting to find out that Lucas Leite learned about the art by watching that same cassette. Though this started him on his path and he was learning from Ryan Gracie, Lucas saw it as a hobby at best and quit for a year due to lack of motivation. Eventually he returned, but due to a family move, he decided to train under Leonardo Vieira and his future forever changed, as he is now at the highest level and a decorated competitor under Checkmat. A regular on the podium is awesome in itself, but considering that Lucas competes at heavyweight, two weight categories above his natural weight division (lightweight), makes it astounding! Recently on a beautiful warm, sunny day in Orange County, CA, we had the pleasure of chopping it up again with the 5x World Champion. Like he did in issue 3, Lucas showed us a variety of ways to work the half guard, as he’s known for it being his bread and butter because he’s so amazing at using the position. Once again we were treated to a plethora of amazing goodies and were like kids in a candy store with big wide eyes. Checkout http://www.lucasleitebjj.com if you’d like to find out more about him or get information about his school.

In this video Lucas transitions from knee shield half guard, to X-guard and then takes the back. Assisting him is his brown belt, Patricia Fontes.

For more information on Lucas Leite, a break down of this move and others he demonstrates, more great techniques from other high level practitioners, news, product reviews, nutritional advice, conditioning programs, supplements information, and more check out issue #28 of Jiu-Jitsu Magazine.
With a nickname like “The Lion Killer” and being involved in jiu-jitsu you’ve got to be able to back it up and Garry Lee Tonon has done more than that! As a multiple time World No-Gi & Pan Ams No-Gi Champion Garry has been on a hot streak of finishing a slew of opponents. He’s been tearing up the FIVE Grappling circuit and is the first EBI (Eddie Bravo Invitational) Champion at 170 lbs. His submission over position style makes for extremely exciting matches like those that he’s had against Kit Dale, AJ Agazarm, Keenan Cornelius, and his epic match at the 2013 ADCC match against Kron Gracie that set the jiu-jitsu community abuzz! Recently Garry dropped by Jiu-Jitsu Magazine HQ and demonstrated some of the unorthodox submission set ups that he’s known for. To find out more about Garry check him out via social media on Twitter (https://twitter.com/Garry_Tonon) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/tonongarry).

In this video Garry demonstrates the same high elbow guillotine choke that he used to finish Kit Dale at Metamoris 4.

For more information on Garry, a break down of this move and others he demonstrates, other great techniques, news, product reviews, nutritional advice, conditioning programs, supplements information, and more check out issue #27 of Jiu-Jitsu Magazine.
San Diego, CA offers a variety of great opportunities; the weather, the beach, entertainment and especially jiu-jitsu. We had the opportunity recently to finally meet up with an individual who’s been getting a lot of requests from fans to be in Jiu-Jitsu Magazine. Enter Keenan Cornelius, who dropped some knowledge on us at Atos Jiu-Jitsu (http://www.atosjiujitsuhq.com).

In this video Keenan demonstrates three moves from his lapel guard. The firs is an X-guard sweep, followed by a back take, and finishes with a sweep to armbar. Assisting him is Leo D’avila.

For the full breakdown of all the moves seen in this video, as well as a personal Q&A with Keenan be sure to grab a copy of issue #24 of Jiu-Jitsu Magazine.

About Keenan:
Keenan Cornelius went from unknown purple belt to celebrity status within the jiu-jitsu community in an extremely short amount of time. He is the only competitor to ever win the Grand Slam of jiu-jitsu; which is double gold medals (both his weigh class and absolute/open weight class) in the four major IBJJF events (European Open Championships, Pan-American Championships, World Championships and Brazilian National Championships) all within a years time at his belt level (purple at the time). Keenan nearly competed a second Grand Slam at brown belt, narrowly missing by an advantage point at the World Championships. His website is http://www.keenan-cornelius.com.

In this video Keenan demonstrates his knee bar trap series from inside the half-guard, from his half-guard, and what he calls the knee bar guard.

His website is http://www.keenancornelius.com.
