Everyone knows that once you get a locked in lapel guard (worm squid gubber etc) the position feels stupid strong. But getting there while still maintaining a strong guard can be difficult. To avoid feeling like you are lost with a limp lapel in your hand before achieving a lapel guard you have to understand the foot placements, the grips and the body positioning to play guard with just a hand on the lapel. These positions are called intermediary controls. The inbetween guards that tie the system together and is what has allowed me to make this all work at a High level. I have never shown this concept before but this is the key that lapel guard players are missing.
