Agreed. My first win in a tournament at white belt came by way of straight ankle lock. Like you said, nobody expects it at that level and it’s totally legal.
I really dislike when dudes do this at the academy when we are sparing in white belt only classes. Seems like a hail mary move dudes pull when they can’t pass your guard. Leave the damn feet alone until your develop great movement, positions, etc. Best case they cant even apply it correctly and I end up yanking my foot and passing or worse case we gotta do this silly rolling thing and I eventually tap just ensure they don’t figure out how to apply it correctly and damage my ankle.

I have seen so many people lose in tournaments trying straight ankle locks, opponent comes up to defend and gets two points for the sweep.
