So it looks like the same principle as the Peruvian necktie where the straightening out of his left leg is what causes the most choking pressure. When they turn and he gable grips his hands together it just secured the choke even more but again, it’s the left leg that does all the choking. Think of it like starting a motorcycle. Try that on ur teddy bear and see 😏

few and far between stick with the armbar

Very rare to pull off, but as said the leg is now a post . Elevate the head and squeeze while straightening leg.

The gable grip prevents the person from effectively defending against the choke by turning.

The first one is a throat crush so the back of your knee needs to be directly on their trachea(center of throat). If opponent turns to defend this choke, changing the position of their trachea relative to the back of your knee, switch to the gable grip choke which is either a blood choke or a neck crank. Both are nasty.

If he turns u need more pressure on the neck, that’s why he goes to the gabel grip so you have a strong grip to pull with.

Angie LaFlor that’s the best jiu jitsu question I’ve seen in this group, and exactly what this group is meant for. So I am going to answer that question for you: The grip changes so he can apply positive pressure from the back of the neck while still maintaining head control. Nothing else changes here (ie he will still be straightening the lead leg) except in the off chance where your grip is deep enough to use as the opposite choking half. I hope this answers your question, and curiosity combined with consistency wins this game. Good luck!!

He’s more likely to turn into you I reckon, elbow to the mat for arm bar defence and negates the choke option.
Be good use for catching them out when hitch hiking mind.

When he initially straightened his let, the back of his knee is crushing against the trachea. When the guy turns, it exposes his carotid arteries for a cleaner choke with the forearm,
but the choke needs reinforcement and pulling pressure from his far side hand .

When applying chokes, always pay mind to the where the carotid arteries are, as a general tip. If the choke isn’t working, its generally because one side is not being compressed properly!

    Hope that helps!

Thank you so much everybody for your help with this. I know it was just a small detail but you know in Jiu-Jitsu Details Matter right so it’s important to know what to be aware of. Although I did receive a few different answers it’s given me a better idea that essentially it’s used for strength and to potentially change the choke from Airway to blood…at least that’s what I got out of the variety of answers in which I received hahaha
