The Canto Choke is very versatile in its variations. You can do it from top position and from bottom guard as well.
In this variation, I show it from top half guard. I don’t need to get out of the position, I can do it while my leg is trapped. It a bit harder than in other top positions (side, modified scarf hold) but it’s much less expected.

Some pointers – if you hurt his neck, your grip is too deep. If the choke doesn’t work well, it’s not deep enough. I place my head on the mat to base and extend my arm so the blade of my hand rests right on his arteries.
