How many times have you heard someone say: “I’m too old for this”?

But old for what, exactly? Competing? Challenging yourself? Evolving?

When I started competing in the ’90s, things were very different. If I’m not mistaken, at the very first Brazilian Nationals in 1994, the Masters divisions only went up to what we called Senior 1 (today’s Master 2 — 36 to 40 years old). That was it.

Fast forward to today: IBJJF already has divisions all the way to Master 7 (61+)… and soon, Master 8 (66+) will be a reality. Why? Because so many practitioners are proving that age doesn’t mean slowing down — it means adapting, learning, and still showing up.

I’ll be 51 in a couple of months, and honestly, I never imagined I’d still be pushing myself on the competition mats at this age. Yet here we are. The sport is evolving, and so are we.

So the real question is: Old for what?
