The 4 Ranges of Guard | Concepts


One of the most difficult aspects of Jiu-Jitsu for most people is that they are taught endless techniques and details but very rarely are they given any sort of conceptual frameworks in which to place those techniques.
That means those techniques really only work as long as the practitioner can remember them (often not for long) or as long as the exact conditions for the technique apply.
Without a conceptual grounding, the techniques are limited in the width or their utility as well as poorly able to adapt if the situation changes.
Here, I discuss the best way to develop a guard – by focusing on having an option at all four ranges. You will naturally gravitate and master one range but you need to have proficiency in all four.
