Troubleshooting the Triangle Choke
•••••••••••••••••••••••
One of the powerful strangles in grappling is the triangle. The intention is to compress your opponent’s carotid artery with your thigh and their own arm. The entry to the submission is not always the optimal finishing position. The tricky aspect with this submission is to transition to the best finishing position without losing the choke.
.
Ideal finishing position for the triangle you will be perpendicular to your opponent with your top shin parallel to their shoulder line and have their far arm across their midline.
.
Here is an example of live troubleshooting to get the finish. My opponent wisely is keeping his arm away from his midline while attempting to regain upright posture to take pressure off the left side of his neck. I had to get the proper angle while keeping his posture broken so I use his right arm as a base to pull myself into the perpendicular position. I locked my hands over his head to maintain control over his posture.
.
Next I changed the squeeze motion instead of adducting my thighs I internally rotated my right leg. The rotation motion helped to get his shoulder to pressure into his own neck even though his arm was away from midline. With this alteration I was able to finish the choke.
