Personally I wouldn't have shot him even if he fell inside the door unless he raised the hatchet in a threatening manner. I way the principal against the outcome. Maybe he was gonna murder someone with it maybe he was trying to work somewhere. That is not for me to judge. The audio would've been nice and could've easily changed the viewers minds. He could've said he was gonna chop his wife up but I think tackling the guy would've been better if you know what you're doing..

Absolutely not justified. Was the shop keeper's life in jeopardy? Nope. His loved ones? Nope. Any innocent bystanders? Nope. In addition to this, he started the entire confrontation by grabbing the guy. He obviously had security in his store. Call the cops, get a description of the guy, let him go.

This guy's going to jail for a loooooonggg time.

And I say this as an 8 year CCW holder, so I'm definitely NOT AGAINST having/using a firearm for self defense. Should only be used as a LAST resort, IMO.

This shoplifter was holding a hatchet that he stole from this man. He knew he was caught and continued to try to leave. The shop owner was trying to detain him and it looked to me that the guy was turning his body in the direction of the shop owner.

The perp was being detained while holding a DEADLY weapon.

Who knows the guys intent with that hatchet. (I know if someone was stealing a loaded gun the reaction from John would be very different)

John could you live with yourself if the shoplifter left the store got a couple blocks away and starting hacking people to death?

This seems fine to me. We as a culture need to stop feeling sorry for criminals. They make their choices.

at the very least this store owner is guilty of negligent homicide. I always carry a non lethal weapon a collapsible baton,  for situation like this.

The law will condemn him… Nevermind the fact that he's stolen an axe. Personally, don't care… I'm okay with a shop owner taking out a thief who's trying to get away.

Guns are for protecting yourself or others to prevent death by a intruder or aggressor, not killing shop lifters.

Good videos. I watch every day. I did have an incident where an attorney was hired (unrelated). One thing he taught me was in a court of law legal, is all that matters. It's what can be proved. I firmly believe the man acted wrongly, because if he'd let him go and called police to say a man just stole a razor shop hatchet, the police would have been all over it. He should not have taken the man's life.

Over a hatchet? No that was not right. That was the wrong way to handle that. The guy was just trying to get away. Didn't look like the had any fight in him.

In my opinion the robber set in play all outcomes of this one. Was the shot justified? Maybe not but, certainly wouldn't have happened if the robbery wasn't happening. I don't blame the shop keeper. I blame the robber for starting the action and having the consequences of his actions. personally in situations like this I will always side with the shopkeeper. The robber is breaking the law no matter what the outcome.

The video of this was posted in a Facebook group I belong to with the question as to if it was a good shoot. In reading through the responses, I rediscovered how many gun owners know nothing about gun laws, self defense laws or even have real common sense. What I found most disturbing is realizing how many carriers seem to be looking for an excuse to draw their weapon instead of trying to avoid drawing their weapon.

Hey, John. A similar situation happened here. But with an off duty officer. The subject was unarmed, fled the store, ran across the highway to a car wash. Held up the stolen item witnesses said was a mini hatchet in those plastic blister packs.. and surrendered. The O.D. shot him six times…

Tragic. I would want to carry this on my conscience over a hatchet. Another moral is don’t rob people, whoever you might be robbing could be just “itchin’” to shoot some thief.
