One of the greatest joys in life is the day you receiver your Black Belt. It’s a hard feeling to describe, I hope this video serves as a motivation for those of you who are in pursuit of this goal.

His son started training Gracie Jiu-Jitsu a few years ago after getting bullied in 6th grade. Recently he was attacked by a much larger opponent and the altercation was recorded. Even though his opponent wasn’t 300lbs, this gives you a great idea of how different a fight looks when the smaller person knows basic jiu-jitsu principles of punch protection and distance management. Bottom line: 80lbs smaller and was able to fully neutralize the attacker without throwing a single punch.

The reason is simple, when you don’t know JJ and you end up on the bottom of the fight you only have 2 functioning limbs and you’re frantically trying to figure out how to use them. Usually this consists of “pushing” and “punching” from the bottom. But as a beginner in JJ you immediately learn how to use the guard to employ all 4 limbs from the bottom. And in class number 5 (Gracie Combatives) you quickly learn that the WORST thing you can do against a giant is to push or punch from below and that all resources should be spent managing the distance between you and the opponent to eliminate their striking potential. Only once the opponent exhausts their initial burst of energy would you then advance to a better position or end the fight with a submission.
