Kuzushi ➡️ Tsukuri ➡️ Kake
Off-Balance ➡️ Position ➡️ Execute
#
The three main components of a judo throw. Let’s break them down with “classic-style” Kata-Guruma (KG):
#
1️⃣ Kuzushi: – Pull on uke’s sleeve/arm up and back towards you. This creates the pocket or space you see in other throws such as ippon/morote seoi. – Make sure you KEEP PULLING as you drop! – The grip on this throw is unorthodox – cross-sleeve and tricep/armpit is what we’re showing, though the throw can be done with many other grips, including cross-sleeve and lapel, double sleeve, or even just lapel.
#
2️⃣ Tsukuri: – The positioning happens at the same time as the kuzushi. – This throw is commonly done by landing on one’s knees, or on the knee closest to uke and the side of the far leg. – Land perpendicular to uke for proper loading on the shoulders; maintain good posture so you can finish the throw and avoid injury. – Trap the arm you pulled during kuzushi and grab the leg to lock uke in.
#
3️⃣ Kake: – To execute this throw, you want uke to roll over the shoulder you have trapped. – Whether you stand back up (like in the video) is optional, but it helps create maximum drive for the roll. – Roll across your shoulders and bridge to put pressure on uke and ensure they land on their back. – Transition to a pin after in case the throw is not called for ippon!

? Watch until the end ?
#
Action ➡️ Reaction
#
Judo is as much a mental game as it is a physical game. Imposing your techniques on your opponent by anticipating their reactions is key to an ippon.
#
In this randori clip, tori anticipates the large step uke takes when he is pulled to enter an O-Uchi-Gari.
Seeing that that technique alone won’t be enough to get the throw (due to where the uke’s weight and momentum are), tori switches to a ken-ken Uchi-Mata by reaping with the hooking leg and changing the kuzushi.
