The Hook Sweep in 5 Steps, the Most Important Sweep in BJJ vs Kneeling Opponents

The Hook Sweep in 5 Steps, the Most Important Sweep in BJJ vs Kneeling Opponents

The hook sweep (also known as the butterfly sweep and/or sumi gaeshi) is the most important sweep in your arsenal against kneeling opponents. It consists of 5 basic steps…
1, Secure your grips (typically an overhook and an underhook)
2, Tuck the foot on your overhook side under your leg on the underhook side
3, Fall sideways onto your shoulder
4, Lift with your hooking leg (which is on the underhook side), and
5, Drive off your bottom leg for more power.

Typically you’re going to end up in side control or broken scarf hold position (aka kuzure kesa gatame) but sometimes you can also go directly to mount.
