another counter to this is slipping to a wrestlers 2 on 1 and if they still don't give up the grip you can finish a wristlock

I counter by turning towards the collar they grip and gripping around their back leading into Sumi Gaeshi; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-eJWMt-2_0 fast forward the video to the 4:32 mark and imagine uke has a cross grip

In judo as of the 2017 Rule change you can have any grip for ~45 seconds (including cross grip) to make an attack.
*as long as you're not defensive in your gripping

I really like the cross collar grip break that travis stevens shows in the last Worlds seminar. Its in the Graciemag video. It basically is what xande was doing in this video. When someone get cross collar on you, you shuck like getting a russian tie from head and arm, and grab as far across their back as possible. Travis shows it allows for a really good sumi gaeshi attack, a reset, and a shuck to get uke down into turtle to attack the back.

Yup this and cutting across someones knee for a throw is just two of the many moves you can do but your being an ass if you do in judo. Did judo for a long time and just got into bjj it brings a chuckle to me hearing some of the guys that have never done anything but bjj talk about what they can do after they get thrown.

Oh almost forgot in the days before the no leg grab BS the counter if you didn't want to just break your opponent the counter was outside single leg then if they stiffed you out turn to the inside for a makakomi'ish thow.

Nice insight, the counter to CCG is classic judo and you can plus receive a flying armbar as a counter too, ive saw so many times, and my sensei always told us , avoid CCG unless you are throwing, i with you fail, go back to arm or belt grip

When people cross grip I use the Russian 2 on 1. You can force a wrist lock or use 2 on 1 takedown tree of techniques or reach over the back. I pray for people to cross grip me. Sambo has this all figured out already.

Awesome work as always! Any chance of BJJ SCOUT making a breakdown of how Conor Mcgregor can cause the biggest upset in sports history, by knocking out 49-0 Floyd Mayweather?

Sacrifice throws like tomoe nage still work when the other guy is stiff arming.

@BJJSCOUT Waki-gatame from standing is more or less banned now in judo. Referee discretion in the past was a bit more lenient, but in the past few years they've come down hard on this. It's very hard to do a standing waki-gatame now without getting hansoku-make.

From a safety perspective that makes total sense. High level judo-ka are strong as oxen and are not there to f*** around. Also, there are lots of actual injuries, and they were horrifying, so it's proven to be needlessly dangerous both in theory and in practice.

In terms of less dangerous counters, cross grip (ie, Russian two on one) is the most common counter in Sambo. Here is excellent instruction from Travis Stevens: first dislodge their fist off your shoulder (this is easier said than done, depending on the opponent), pin their elbow to your chest, and rotate the body hard to get the cross grip. This requires a lot of core strength to do on a skilled opponent.

    https://youtu.be/n05PdHl2PJM?t=14m31s

Travis steps deep in between their legs in the above video, similar to how he does his Koga-style ippon seoi nage. Personally I like to hook their far leg with a butterfly hook instead, and then turn on one leg, which is Mongolian style (other judo-ka and Sambo people do it as well). It takes more balance, but gives me more connection and accuracy when doing the turn.

Makikomi throws are "into" your opponent, never "away" as shown here (imagine the arm a trapped and your back faces/touches the opponent's chest). I do not know the traditional name for this throw, but it seems effective.
