By far the most honest take on folkstyle from a professed BJJ analyst. Thanks for this breakdown.

No disrespect to Olympian Askren. But Khabib's MMA grappling/wrestling is a bit more superior than Askren I guess.

This is amazing. I'm recently learning about the systems that make up bjj, but now you present alternative systems that are just as effective! Amazing how many variations there are to one human body dominating another on the ground!

Is it just me or did Ben really didnt want the rear naked choke? I mean he literally got like a dozen of chances of his opponent's back. And he was just funk'n ground and pound. Like he didnt telly want the fight to end or something.

Who’s here to study Ben Askren now that he’s going to the UFC

  11. Arjun says

Recently started watching MMA and was fascinated by Ben's dominance . I found his fights to be interesting, never really understood why people found them boring. Now that he is finally in UFC, waiting to see if he can prove people wrong.

There's a seminar of Cormier and Valzquez in Russia and they go through a lot of them sequences.

They even seemed to have a strike count in each position before they Consider their risk of letting their opponent escape.

  17. CIRCLE OF TONE. says

I noticed Askren is so adept at top positioning it almost looks like breakdancing. Spinning on top of opponents but retaining chest pressure is next level. Then he almost levitates and spins into side control to grind away. It's art. Just getting his foot out of half guard is a clinic. But it's all about putting it together along with freakish strong hand grip power and his brain.

Yo BJJ Scout who are you? Your analysis is on point. My kid is a grey belt in BJJ right now and I'm trying to teach him wrestling as a counterpart, but I only have a year of wrestling experience. If I had to choose one for right now (he's 11), which do you think is more important?

I wrestled for 8 yrs throughout school. Started BJJ at 29 and had no clue about subs or what to do on my back , but had a huge advantage when it came to just holding someone there and staying calm. Two years later and i'm happy to say I now know how to setup a sub or two. Great video btw!

I think these studies of yours which demonstrate the unique brilliance of Askren played a significant part in putting pressure on the UFC to give him a shot. You've educated many journalists & fans. Brilliant work.

Blah blah blah… Brazilian jujitsu this Brazilian jujitsu that…it doesn't matter if you know BJJ . If you've got a wrestler who knows position and angles and is able to defend against submissions, The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu guy gonna die…Submissions sacrifice positions. Period.

  32. Brenden Gutierrez says

    November 28, 2018 at 6:23 pm

I feel like the creator of this video thinks some things only are taught in BJJ and not in wrestling. Things like the crucifix and back takes such as at 4:11 are things wrestlers common use. If you watch a lot of wrestlers you’d know this.

  33. Chad Fahlman says

3:25 Rickson did an umpa vid with Budo Jake. He clears the space where his head was before bridging. Could this be why the sweep here got stuffed?

  36. strongwomans says

    January 22, 2019 at 12:33 pm

Jiu Jitsu also is very effectib wrestling alone isnt enough but you need some strenght and athletics to finishing a takedowns thats why the small skinny guys always pull guard… in mma they getting smashed

  38. Tyler Goodrich says

Yah but the rules of both bjj and mma incentivize going to the turtle position. In a real fight that is a horrible position to be in. It's very difficult to defend the back of your head catching punches and elbows. You could easily get knocked out in that position.

Hey folks i been doing judo for they last 8 years, What is the diference between folk Styles wrestling and freestyle wrestling ?

  41. RedRaider 3000 says

    March 5, 2019 at 9:32 am

The part of all this that bothers me is that Askren really has a beautiful style with solid jiujitsu skills, but because he is so newaza intensive and at the same time he isnt an IBJJF recognized BlackBelt, i think he would be treated differently in MMA if he was recognized, i certainly theorize thats part of the reason that Dana has the red@ss for him so much, his style is no different than Khabib, Maia, Kron, etc., but all those guys are IBJJF BlackBelts

Mmmmmm sweet baby jesus I love these videos. Muuuch better format than the new robovoice. With this format I can actually just tune in to the content and actually think about/imagine the techniques that are being explained rather than focusing on some awful robot talking at me
