5:34 finally someone actually calls out the snake oil that Luke Thomas peddles every monday after a UFC event. cant believe people actually listen to that fraud and think they're actually learning something.

I felt Maia's striking may have been more damaging than thought which made Ben go for the takedown earlier as opposed to him feeling safe, as he certainly didn't look safe in the grappling exchanges previously.

Good analysis. I always look for your stuff after the fights. I really liked this fight. I thought Maia was on point with his grappling. And, Ben had an excellent game plan throughout MOST of the fight. This match did not disappoint.

You wouldn't believe how many people think Askren isn't and will never be a top level fighter in MMA and should retire. But I think that approach is what ended Rousey's relevance. I think if he takes some time and really focused on his striking and the intricacies of his counter grappling, he could definitely fight for a title later in his career

Amazing video. In my opinion Askren lost the first round standing and the grappling exchange was pretty close.
On the second I give to Askren standing and close grappling again.
On the third he didn’t play safe tried passing Maya’s guard and it went down hill. The tried the worse possible way to scape against Maia’s mount. It worked earlier in the previous rounds but maya stuffed it on the third. One he got his back is you look closely. Maya recognizes that Askren as double teaming his hands and hand fight him by getting inside control on both sides ( hands) he brings the choking arm lower on Askren biceps after punching and Askren can’t find the choking arm a split second later that choking arm is around his neck and it’s over. He’s also strangling your Askren solar plex with his legs.
    Thanks for the videos. ??????

Position over submission. I still think Ben could use some more wrestling seasoning from Curren Jacobs, but hey. Sucker move to consider retirement, but his choice after all. Respect Everyone.

Askren was already going to sleep before Maia connected the second hand, he basically choked Askren with one hand.

??? What fighting IQ makes mix martial artist great ???‍♂️⁉️Knowing the moves is very important but what makes you great is “The system of controlling repositions” When one position is being lost another position should be starting to engage; Wrestlers know it as scrambling drills; ?‍♂️ But wrestlers need to understand that typical wrestling scrambling get you in to much trouble when dealing with real bjj brown and black belts; Just because you are doing okay against an elite boxer does not mean you should keep the fight there for to long; ? You should always go to your highest skill set to there weakest; That’s how you win using the highest probability of mixing martial art systems ??⚖️?? Coach James ???‼️

It's unbelievable how a high class grappler as Askren has a terrible Jiu-Jitsu

This is my favorite breakdown you've done.

The beauty of this is how welcome and wanted Askren is because he is so fun to watch his awesome full wrestling that's not based only on shots but full expertise … And Maia did in fact redeem bottom fighting in the exact way YOU talk about surprisingly after a really bad run from bottom fighters and great run from too fighters in MMA … And you are absolutely right again, basic ideas trap arm omnoplata … It's not surprising it's predictable, knee bar is advanced to some x guard is effective but these are all well known … But the overall basics of controlling space punishing gaps and stand ups is extremely important to do and to manage to trap sweep as you are pointing out … It's the strategy mindset and basics of how not what … And his knowledge of good choice instinct that has made Maia on display as the best bottom fighter I'm seeing today.

It's interesting to see for me: overall best top fighter (Severn was good but less funky fun)

Vs bottom fighter redeeming BJJ bottom position through exactly what you said trap sweeps.

    That's sticky stuff.

Askren did fight left foot forward and still beautifully out wrestled his opponent.

Both were absolutely perfect in that way as an onlooker from the crowd.

Nice thoughts on active posting and floating, well out of my awareness and yet so obvious at the same time.

There's bearing the technique and beating the overall fight active posting adds a lot of just plain and simple sweep resistance, and understanding the sweeps is needed you can always change it up.

Ben should have come in with the mindset of his wreslting. He tried to play the BJJ game, he has 9 years of experience and DM has 30 + years of BJJ experience. I still do not undersand why wrestlers do not train, in Catch, rather than BJJ, it must be more natural to collegiate wrestlers to learn catch. Coming from the UK, I always thought of wrestling as submission art, therefore subs come naturally.

Maia outstruck Askren according to punch stats. Askren was not as dominant on the feet like many believe in this fight
