  4. I was training with my friend hours before the McGregor/Poirier fight. He asked how Poirier might win, and I showed him slipping with the Lock into a long lead shovel hook (Dustin does sometimes, like Moore or Mayweather), and interrupting the karate blitz/ deep step "parry the guard and blast with rear hand" with oblique kicks/side kicks to the knee, and calf kicks.
    "Karate boxers" like McGregor are going to focus more on bouncing in and out from an upright stance and shifting offline, like the Russian school of boxing, now that the calf kick is en vogue. Stepping deep for the parry + straight Deontay Wilder style is being punished more and more frequently at this level.

Actually There is a way to block them if you use that wide karate side stands One way is to make sure that shit heel touches your butt while turn out u leg sometimes guys will try to follow and kick ur knee And break the instep off their feet. If you’re using the Thai Stance where are you constantly tapping your lead leg on the ground You can check it with your opposite back leg But only if you’re in a more narrow stance. The fact that no one knows about this actually surprises me. I actually learned this move in judo because a lot of guys who do Foot sweeps Tend to do a lot of kicking to calves

  10. cannot stand kavanagh's take on this. for like a good 5 years now (at least) we've seen how devastating the calf kick is. he even references the drop foot with other fighters! I don't get how he can say that, then go on to say that he didn't realize how devastating a technique it is. like wtf? did he think conor was impervious? I used to think the "irish edmond" comments were a bit much but as time passes I think it was a more and more prescient take. christ at least edmond has decent up-and-coming fighters now!

  12. Been doing mma more than 20 years. Only one joint injury ( other than neck) : knee injury, from the only calf kick i ever received in sparring. I didnt walk for a week, slowly got better. Bothers me from time to time…

  20. Interesting how every couple of years the metagame is redefined by a new kick, everyone was crying about Oblique Kicks in 2019 and now they're crying about Calf Kicks in 2021. All I can say is "Sweep the leg" Johnny.

  25. Could you train for dealing with them in a gym by wrapping your calf in some sort of protective material? That way your training/sparring partner can do full speed calf kicks so you can practice avoiding or checking them? Just curious if that is a possibility or if it’s still too risky to the fighter

  33. Khabib made his team mates kick his legs every sesion. When he was asked how you are preparing for Geahtje low kicks he showed he bruised leg.

  34. Conor should go train with Wonderboy for a while, people try to low kick him all the time but he either slides out the way then retaliates, or is able to check it even from a bladed karate stance
