I was a bit disappointed that you didn't include Burns' possible counters to Usman's strategy. My two cents? All this mat return shenanigans makes one's legs wide open for leglock entries. I'm not sure how good of a heelhooker Burns is, but someone skilled in the 50/50 position could relatively easily dive on the legs from a number of positions shown (e.g. reverse bodylock, single leg, cross body) and put some damage on Usman from a position he is not going to easily leave…

I haven't done a ton of wall work, just here and there when MMA guys need a hand, but I've found the leg trips (like the ones discussed in this video) are especially good for getting people down when you're the guy on the top. Ouchi gari especially has worked well for me when people spread wide to defend doubles and I'm mostly square with them. Kosoto gake (with or without the drop) usually does the trick when I'm off to a side (it looked like that's what usman was doing a lot in this video.) Drop Seoi (a la Karo Parysian) has also worked out pretty well but I can see how it could also go pretty wrong so it probably won't ever be a main meta solution.

As far as being the guy on the wall, I've never really worked getting back up drills against the wall so I've got no experience to go on there. When I'm the one pinned from the standing position, arm drags usually wind up being my go to to get the space to disengage. That might already be a common thing though idk, I haven't watched much MMA since people quit just coming over from whatever martial art and actually got good at the sport.

This is going to be an interesting fight because they are both high level grapplers in a sense with combat experience. The weird thing is that Burns also has crazy good wrestling in addition to his world class BJJ, this should be interesting. I know people will be saying, "Well its MMA wrestling and MMA BJJ, it's different"; I agree with that but they both also have great MMA wrestling/BJJ.

This is going to be a great fight in styles, I hope they don't just end up striking each other lol(it would be insanely educational if they both put their best grappling game forward).

Obvious solution is to concede grappling in the intermediate stages and go straight to the ground and allow top control from there. Usman's open grappling cant be as good as his his folk style grind of hands on floor and building positions. That said his takedowns from the open of the cage will drive you to the cage even with a phenomenal sprawl.
So it would require either holding your ground which is tough to do against a power puncher or be a good ring general which Justin G showed will tire you out. IMO Burns should throw a heavy volume of kicks and punches to invite the takedown and do damage and then turn hard with your sprawl to end in the cage center or turn off the wall when he commits to either attempt sweeps or submissions to result in sweeps. I doubt a swept Usman (which would be an insane task) would have any answer from bottom besides typical single leg get ups which head and arm chokes could defuse but I would never threaten guillotines too risky and obvious.
A solution to the clinch most people are finding themselves in to me would be starting your own clinch with a double underhook which no striker seems to want to do against good grapplers out of fear but it's not hard to win a clinch against better grapplers when you have double unders imo. Only fear is a lateral drop.

usman is cool. people need to calm. really enjoyed this analysis. I love that it centred around breaking down one very specific situation so intricately. it's easier to consume that way. when you look at so much at once it can be harder to take in and almost becomes like a lecture where you only take in a portion of it.

An I see the UFC trading Usman for some bum lol

Demetrious Johnson had the best cage work I ever saw. Mostly because he wasn't hell bent on holding a specific position. He'd push you against the wall, drop to a double, come back up with a punching combo, drop to a single, run the pipe, let go to throw a hook, push you back against the wall with a thai clinch, knee the hell out of you, then drop for a double and finish.

@bjjscout: I'm glad you're back. You have a great talent for editing. Without that, people will rarely suffer through analysis videos. It's because of your understanding of the principles behind editing that we all stick around every time and enjoy the fuck out of all of your wisdom. ✌️

  41. Mr. Istaphobe says

    February 6, 2021 at 8:01 pm

I must preface this statement with recognizing that Usman is a monster. It takes God given talent and even more relentless work ethic to be as good as he is, at what he does, but I feel bad for the editing team at the UFC. 25 minutes of squeezing the farts out of welterweights doesn’t give them a lot of material to sift through when piecing together a promotional highlight reel that accurately represents his fights. If they make one, it’ll all come from the Covington fight. Although, he has been working with Trevor Whitman. Maybe he’ll develop a serious striking game and wow the fuck out of people. One can only hope. One thing I’ll give Usman, you never, ever….ever, ever, ever hear Mr. George St. Pierre say Usman’s name, and he never, ever will. That truly is a testament to how fucking scary Usman is. He’d rather starve himself to fight Khabib, than get smooshed for 5 rounds by Usman.

  47. Conway Twitty says

Why don’t they plant their head on the mat below his torso? Maybe attack his legs with a double or even punch his legs? It takes a lot of energy to stand up while someone is leaning and punching you. If he’s dirty boxing, fight fire with fire? Standing seems very passive…

A number of modified judo and Greco Roman techniques here too. Effective and efficient.
