Thanks for the videos man, I'm just a lowly white belt but love the funk roll when people stand to pass.

Gr8 vid. It completes a cycle i started four or five years ago as a blue belt. It would emulate Xandes reverse roll to modified funk but if you didn't execute it 100% a guy can take your back ie. if he's stooped lower vs standing breaking your guard. I failed using it in competition and never tried it again. But this vid has reinvigorated me. I try chumorrow.

the problem with the reverse leg in bjj is it leaves you open to the crucifix

Great video bailing on armbars when stacked is my most effective way of to use the funk roll as a smaller guy. Love any video giving props to askren he's the top 3 best MMA grapplers in the game.

The reverse single doesn't kill the cradle attempt altogether, its not getting broken in your position and building a base thru the transition that keeps you safe. If you rest or give in to the cross-face you will get cradled and end up with your arms stuck between their legs and unable to defend yourself. Other than that good analysis

As a wrestler looking to get into BJJ, I didn't realize this was uncommon. It's a classic scramble technique. I like the name "funk roll" though.

Do they teach in BJJ that whoever can lift the ankle higher (relative to starting position) wins?

  22. AnonymousPerson488 says

    July 25, 2017 at 8:31 pm

Great contribution to grappling. Thank you for this. One thought that came to mind watching this is that that reverse leg grip is the same as the arm positioning for the reverse omo plata. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iUhd-6rWjM&t=46s

Just another day taking a wrestling technique, renaming it and soon introduce it as invented by some bjj guy (insert any eddie bravo signature move). Nice job boys.

I have been funk rolling out of failed triangle attempts rather than switching to omaplata which is a low percentage sub for me. I'd rather have the chance to come out the back and get top control.

I incorporated this into my jiu jitsu and eventhough i have a somewhat good guard, when people pass it i do this move and with little effort i end up on top. Thank you for sharing this, ps i have been pulling this move since 2015, a lot of trial and error but now im able to hit it effortlessly.

I always get countered by a crucifix in bjj when using the funk. Marcelo vs Askren went quite the same. I want to find out how to avoid that position while still being able to funk.

Damn I was doing this by accident lol I thought it looked stupid and sloppy but worked great. I come from a freestyle background so we never exposed our backs like this

Wrestling is FAR and AWAY the best base in MMA. Its a straight up fact. DC holds two titles, GSP probably the GOAT was a wrestler first, Khabib the most dominate fighter in the history is a wrestler (beat the dog ish out of conor mcTapper) Askren is undefeated. TJ Dillashaw. Henry Cejudo. All wrestlers and title holders. Where is your Damian Maia? Your only hope currently is Jacare.
