👉At UFC 228 main event, defending champion @twooodley submitted challenger @darrentill2 with an excellent d’arce choke, defending his title and earning his BJJ black belt. Congrats champ! Escaping the D’arce choke can be challenging, but it’s definitely not impossible. The escape I demonstrate in the video can be a little counter-intuitive – many people feel uncomfortable turning belly down to the mat – but by quickly controlling your opponent’s near leg, you can both escape and takedown your opponent in one move. If your opponent is strong and tries to push you back into the D’arce position, you can utilize their momentum and sweep them over you, landing right into the pre-side control position where you can continue the sequence normally by pushing your opponent’s leg and turn chest-to-chest with your opponent.

Thorough studying of his opponent was a major factor contributing to the win. Here, Renzo teaches how a BJJ fighter must map out their opponent’s game, identifying virtues and weaknesses as well as tendencies. Then it’s time to use imagination, to create hypotheses, to remember the plan the entire time. And most intriguing: If during the match, you realize the strategy isn’t working, you must be able to adapt, just like Renzo did in Manila. Listen to Renzo’s own account here.

How does Conor do the near impossible and defend Khabib’s takedowns at UFC229? Here we take a look at Conor’s six lines of takedown defence and how they can stop Khabib’s go-to takedown pattern – a battle that will go a long way to deciding the victor on October 6.
Conor’s 6 lines of takedown defence:
1. Feeling and framing
2. Quick sprawl
3. Overhook pull-up and push away
4. Overhook pull-up to high clinch
5. Underhook + wrist control to push off and escape high clinch
6. Trip defence
