Shawn Williams Bear Trap Series Part 3: Bear Trap From De La Riva Guard

Here is a very interesting entry from the De La Riva (DLR) guard that leads you directly into the bear trap. Not quite as versatile as the bear trap from the bottom; however, this position can still lead to many attacking, passing, and defensive options. One major caveat however, it is absolutely critical that you keep the trap knee (in this case, my right knee) flared open to keep the integrity of the trap. You may elect to push your opponents DLR knee downwards to strengthen that flare. By chance, if your opponent does push that knee towards the floor (closing your knee), back stepping into a kneebar/ inside sankaku position is a great option with a little practice. This video is highlighting the entry only. Follow ups attacks can easily include heel hooks, toe holds, and leg drags to name a few 🙂
