watching the whole tournament yesterday I was able to see many good matches, but none was as intense and technical as jessa x mayssa
these two girls went back and forth in an exchange of techniques and dominance that made the fight a treat to anyone watching. mayssa was very dominant in the lower belt ranks and became the black belt world champion in her first year as black, jessa has been a brown belt for less than one year and dominated every competition in the lower belts.
this is the match up I was looking for, and this is the match up that jessa wanted too because she knows they will face each other a lot in the future. mayssa has good control of the score in her matches while jessa fights in a higher pace and chases submission attempts. both have great qualities that can lead to victory. as jessas coach and knowing that she is only 18 and not even a black belt yet, I analyze every attack and mistake and bring it to our attention in order to become better for the next time.
yesterday jessa imposed her game and was able to attack for the majority of the time, got a very tight triangle and was able to sweep opening the score and being ahead until the last 20s of the match, in my opinion she made a mistake of stopping her attacks and changing the approach to secure the victory, that gave mayssa the opportunity to explode in the last 20 seconds, attack the back and win the match.
not the result we wanted but it definitely showed us where jessa is at and what we need to adjust.
next competition for the team is pan ams.

@jessakhan
well rounded. that is a good description of what @jessakhan jiu jitsu is becoming and it is turning her into a much stronger competitor. the game plan is to always overwhelm the opponent with attacks regardless of the position she is in.
@artofjiujitsu
@believeandachieve
the beginning of the black belt journey is probably the most challenging phase for a competitor. it’s exciting and hard, until the ones who will eventually become multiple time world champions raise their level and confidence to get far ahead in the division. its a discovery phase and just like any other phase, there are a lot of experiences, and a lot of improvements. John won Worlds 6 times in the color belts, is a lightweight and by far one of the most technical athletes I know. our goal this weekend was to play on top as much as possible and display his game passing the guard. It was a beautiful display of our style of passing – on to the next now – the goal is the top of this division

another flawless performance by @tainandalpra – at 19 years old and less than a year in the brown belt Tainan showed great technique and amazing control. in 5 matches he was able to score a total of 84 points and 0 points was scored on him. showed a very precise and complete game, doing takedowns, sweeps, back attacks and submissions from everywhere. happy to see your work paying off, you are a true professional athlete.

@believeandachieve

5 years ago I saw a post and I saved it, because at that time I did not understand well what it meant, but I knew how important those words were. 5 years later I see myself raising a little girl and everything makes complete sense now. “young women need self defense more than anyone. they must be taught that no one should tell them they need a men for their own protection. they should be taught that being a girl is a powerful thing and not a disadvantage. they should be taught not only to fight abusive man but a culture that keeps telling them they cant do something just because they are girls. as martial art instructors is our duty to teach them to stand up and always fight for themselves, because fighting like a girl is a beautiful thing.”
thank you @flavioalmeidagb
this video is a high light of my first private lesson with my daughter Ayla, who is 5 years old.

there is a big difference between practicing and preparing, and when the goal is to be a champion, just practicing is not enough.
I believe the sooner you discover your goals, the sooner you start working to make them happen, the greater your chances of achieving.
basically you either wake up fast and start making things happen, or you’ll be left behind.
the high level in the sport is selective, wanting is not enough, it is necessary to show results.
the way I see things, the world works on a “reward system” (basically, the more you do it, the more people value your work, and instead of waiting for opportunities, you create them and it helps you to evolve.
be worthy of opportunities.
training several times a day is the least you will have to do if you decide to be champion. and there are many more people training several times a day.
the goal is to find what set you apart from others, then make it your specialty.
