@coleabatejj competed today at @ibjjf orlando open and got double gold in the juvenile division with another flawless performance. less than a week after he won 4 golds in austin he is already competing again. we’ve decided to skip the nogi and wait to compete at the 8 man bracket from @flograppling – it will be a bracket filled with champions and some young black belts from the new generation – cole is the youngest athlete there, he is still 16 but I know he has what it takes to win against anyone there and I cant wait to watch it happening. we are excited to keep preparing and searching for challenges that can push us towards our goals.
in this video I see the improvements we have been working on the academy lately. his attacks look sharper and stronger than before and his movement is becoming so fluid and smooth. beautiful to watch cole, I am proud of you.

here is a video of my blue belt 18 years student @shelbymurpheyjj winning her last competition. shelby has been training at AOJ since she was a little kid and has been constantly improving year after year. as a kid and juvenile shelby would do great in the academy but was having a hard time controlling her emotions and mindset for competitions, she would prepare and most of the time “freeze” or not perform even close to what she was capable of. that type of challenge is very common and happens to every competitor at some point of their career. as a kid and juvenile she won big tournaments but was not consistent. in the end of the last year she started to show improvements on her mindset and this year has been filled with amazing results. she has won everything and every gold medal is really pushing her to a new level. well rounded game with strong pressure pass she will be a strong representative of the AOJ style of passing in the female rooster weight division alongside our champion @jessakhan in a near future – as a professor its really amazing to see the student putting the work and improving not only on the mat, but also their confidence and approach to training. congrats shelby, this is just the beginning.

our ideal scenario for a match is a dominant progression towards the submission. we normally find a way to get on top (either sweeping or taking the opponent down) pass and submit from the top or from the back. theres always a possibility to use shortcuts, attacking from the guard to create a submission or a back attack.
in these matches @coleabatejj used a lot of details he has been working in the gym, everything combined with great amount of control, one of the main features from our school. congratulations cole, making huge improvements fast. I am proud of you and I am excited for the next challenges.
@artofjiujitsu
sharp attacks by @coleabatejj – we’ve been working on making the right adjustments for him to compete in a nogi black belt bracket soon. as part of the preparation we’ve decided to enter as much competition as possible and put in action what we have been working. today he got double gold in juvenile division, tomorrow he competes nogi and next week he competes gi and nogi in orlando. beautiful jiu jitsu cole.

congratulations to our good friend @gilbert_burns durinho and his team on his win last night. our whole family was watching and cheering for you. durinho came from the same school as us, he trained at Nova Uniao in Rio and then joined us in 2006 where we were training under @ramonlemos – we were training partners since young age. In 2011 we had one of the best moments as a team where we brought home 3 black belt world titles with me, Rafa and Durinho winning our weight divisions. we were all together at @rvcasport when @vitorbelfort invited Durinho to begin his MMA career and last night we were so happy to see how he used his jiu jitsu and showed a champion’s most important skill: the ability to overcome.
in the video you can see perfect timing for the takedowns, great control on the ground using leg weave (always moving towards tge hip and over extending the opponent’s upper body) and sweeping the opponents base every-time he posted his hand on the ground to attempt a technical stand up.
jiu jitsu is amazing, when the level is similar looks like chess where simple mistakes or lack of attention can cost a lot. but when the level is not similar it looks like the less experienced person is desperately drowning.

a couple of months before Rafa won ADCC 2009 he won the brazilian trials. it was a breakthrough event for us and it really put us in the spot light that year. I submitted Malfacine in that event and lost by a takedown to Raoni. Rafa used his guard to attack Raoni’s legs and guarantee his spot at ADCC. he won the brazilian trials and the main event at 19 years old. later on that same year I won my first IBJJF black belt world title. at that time we did not train nogi and it was the third nogi competition of our career. great memories and good stories.
