Tim Kennedys right, I carry the same criticism that sport jiu jitsu gives a false sense of security. Training in the gi and sport jiu jitsu kinda strayed from what jiu jitsu is supposed to be. Especially IBJJF rules, the rules are just bs.
Why don't people do a little research before giving an opinion about the bests competitors of the world. Has Tim Kennedy heard a bout the true greats of bjj like cobrinha, Rafa Mendes, Galvao etc etc who along Marcelo and Roger has been at the top for over a decade. Is he serious mentioning Lovato? So much stupidity and ignorance.

Sports jiujitsu sucks. It doesn't make any sense. To avoid injuries, they should do a competition were you award the fighter that gets into a position where he can beat the crap out of the other guy.
So, you take the guy to the ground, then you get some sort of reward, then you pass his legs, another reward, cause now you can caise serious damage. Then you mount him or you take his back, you can destroy him, that should get a bigger reward…. Oh wait…

tim has a point, hes saying that sport bjj is basically a massive watered down version of true bjj. I mean when u are in mount or side control we aren't taught "dick moves" like face cranks or grinding ur elbow in their face etc all of which make Bjj that much more deadlier/dangerous. Ibjjf has watered bjj down alot. But at the end of the day its sport bjj theres rules to protect the competitors etc and rightly so. I guess imo more gyms should teach bjj as a martial art not a sport

This guy doesn´t know anything about BJJ. Lovato and Ryan are good, but there are so many others that are above , even right now: Cobrinha, Lepri, Lo, Buchecha etc… And last time I heard, you cant gouge people´s eyes in boxing either, even in MMA. Go compete to an ADCC event or even mundials at black belt and tell us that it´s "sporty"…

Tim Kennedy clearly doesn't understand what Jiu-Jitsu is. He mentioned biting and smashing heads into pavement, and never mentions the guard. BJJ hasn't strayed from anything. The same dominant positions are rewarded that have always been rewarded. The guys who hate sport competition are the ones who can't succeed at it.
Tim Kennedy's comment that sport competition goes against the martial arts spirit doesn't make any sense. All martial arts have a sport aspect to their art that is the engine of their technical development. Without sport BJJ, you have very little BJJ development. In MMA, I would put my money on a lower ranking sport BJJ guy than on most Gracie trained black belts. They're not facing the diversity of competition that the sport BJJ guy is. BJJ is BJJ. There is no other kind of BJJ outside of the sport. You get points in BJJ just like you do in MMA. I don't know what he's talking about, but this is typical of the nonsense he is known for.
