Do you include short drilling rounds in your preparation? đđ„
Two weeks until the 2025 @ibjjf Pan Championship! âł The last time I competed at Pans was during my 40-year-old run for the How High Can You Fly? project, when I entered the 2015 @ibjjf Pan in the adult division.
Now, 10 years later, Iâm back for a new How High Can You Fly? projectâthis time as a 50-year-old. đȘđ„ With my body allowing me, I plan to compete in all four major IBJJF events in the Master 5 division, and this is the second one of 2025.
I recorded some training footage for Episode 2 of The Diary of a Master on The BJJ Mental Coach YouTube channel. đ„đș
@itallovilardo has been designing both my mat training and my strength & conditioning, and Iâm fortunate to have someone structuring my workouts so I can focus on executing them. đŻ In this clip, you can see some of the 15-second drilling rounds.
How about you? Do you implement short drilling rounds in your preparation? đ€đ„

What’s up, guys!
Todayâs question comes from a viewer who’s looking to get back into Jiu-Jitsu competitions after a 5-year break due to life and parenthood. Heâs finally starting to get the itch again, but heâs feeling unsure about whether he still has the aggression and competitiveness that most Jiu-Jitsu competitors have.
Heâs worried about going to a competition and getting smashed, and heâs asking if I have any tips to help him get back into the groove.
In this video, Iâll share my own experience with competing, taking a 2-year break for various reasons, and how I eventually got back into the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions.
Iâll also talk about the mental shift I had over timeâthe way my mindset changed as I got older. Competition became a lot less important to me, and the fuel I ran on evolved.
I hope you find this video helpful. Letâs get into it!
Thanks for watching.

#tbt 2014 Abu Dhabi World Pro đ„ @ajptour đ„ Ever locked in a triangle during a tournament and felt your legs burning out as your opponent resisted well? đ đș If youâve been there, you know how draining it can be!
Hereâs a tip: if the wrist is available, keep the wrist lock in mind to save your legs, especially when theyâre holding out strong. Donât limit yourself to the triangle chokeâthink about mixing in Ezekiel, armbars, Kimura, and more. The more options you have, the better youâll be able to adapt and conserve energy! đ„đ§

Today, we’ve got a question from AverageAarron, who is dealing with one of the many Ego battles that those of us who do BJJ often face.
This is true for the entire run of our Jiu-Jitsu careers.
He trained BJJ for 4 months, competed, got Gold in No-Gi, and 3rd in the Gi. He said there were tons of benefits from the comp like an adrenaline high, he’s calmer, and has a better gas tank.
Here’s the problem…
He says he can’t shake this feeling of expectation even though he’s competing at a local master’s tournament.
I’ll dive deep into my own experiences with comp and how I would attack this Ego battle in BJJ.

Mistake 13 – Settling for the Result Before the Match
Have you ever reached the semi-finals or finals of a tournament and, feeling satisfied with your progress, ended up relaxing? Or maybe you won a tough match and felt content, even though there were still more matches ahead? This is mental mistake number 13 on our list of the Top 30 Mental Mistakes Athletes Make: Settling for the result before the competition is over.
In this lesson, we will explore how to avoid this mistake and maintain a mindset of excellence until the very last second of each competition. Itâs not enough to just get close; the focus should be on achieving your true goal without losing momentum. We will discuss strategies to help you stay focused and not let the feeling of âalmost thereâ affect your performance.
Additionally, we will feature testimonials from coaches and athletes that Iâve interviewed on the Mente Blindada 24/7 podcast, sharing their experiences and how they learned to overcome this mental mistake.
If youâve ever found yourself relaxing too early in a competition, this lesson is essential for you.
