Cutting Weight for BJJ Competitions Hurts Performance
To cut weight or not to cut weight for BJJ competitions! That is the question for today’s video.
Shannon who is a 4 stripe Blue Belt is getting ready for a local BJJ tournament in 5 weeks.
And she is on the cusp of 2 different weight classes.
At the tournament there is a 141 weight class and a 152 weight class.
And her walking weight is 146.
This is with her training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu 6 days a week, eating well and feeling high levels of energy!
So she is signed up for the higher weight class for the Brazilian Jiujitsu competition and is wondering if it’s even worth it cut the weight.
Because she is so close to either or, honestly if she knows how to cut weight. She’d be find for her matches.
But in this video I touch on some basic ideas why I would encourage her NOT to cut weight for her upcoming BJJ competition.
One of the big reasons is that if she starts to shed some pounds while she is in the process of upping her training volume.
This can lead to a lot of negative effects.
If you’re in a similar situation. I hope the video helps!

Best Method to Overcome the Crippling Nerves of BJJ Competition
How do you overcome the adrenaline of a BJJ competition. Better yet, how do you get over your 1st competition which you completely bombed?
This is the question our buddy Mike sent to me following his less than desirable performance at a recent IBJJF Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition.
He says the biggest BJJ related problem he experienced with this competition was the nerves and adrenaline that came with it.
He said the adrenaline completely prevented him from playing his game and doing what he wanted to do.
And after under performing during the tournament.
He wants to know how to quell the adrenaline he felt in his 1st crack at BJJ tournaments.
In this video I share a story about 1 of my students who experienced back to back losses before he eventually began winning competitions.
I also touch on the idea that it will become less stressful with time and more experience.
When you compete, it’s a sub skill of BJJ.
It takes a different set of attributes to compete than simply practicing in your gym.
I hope the video is help!

How Hard Should You Roll Leading Up to BJJ Competitions
How hard should you roll in your gym leading up to a BJJ competition and how often should you roll that way?
This is the question Damon asked after competing in his 1st BJJ competition ever.
His question stems from the fact that the tournament match was so intense.
And he says he typically doesn’t feel that level of intensity during his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.
In the video I try to explain my thoughts on BJJ training and rolling in the gym vs a Brazilian Jiujitsu match in a competition.
And it’s my belief that while sometimes your training partners will exceed the skill level of your opponents in a competition, making a match easy.
You probably won’t be able to replicate the same level of intensity from a BJJ competition inside your gym.
Watch the video and see what you think.
Enjoy the video.

I often get asked my opinion on competing in BJJ tournaments…
Is it worth it? Am I gonna get better faster if I compete? Am I gonna get promoted faster?
There are many hidden benefits about competing in tournaments that you may not know, but the final decision is always yours… you don’t have to compete if you don’t want to.
I cover a lot of good stuff in the video above, please take a look and let me know your thoughts!

Competing Against BJJ Teammates (Good and Bad Experiences )
Have you ever had to compete against one of your training partners in a BJJ tournament?
This is the problem our friend TJ is faced with in an upcoming Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournament.
He says he’s gearing up for one of the biggest competitions in Canada. And he says that right now potentially 3-5 other of his teammates.
In this video I discuss my experience with competing against BJJ teammates both as a competitor and from a coaching stand point.
Again, much of this is personal preference, so everyone is different. But hopefully the information shared in the video will help you if you’re ever in a situation where you have to possibly compete against your teammate in a Brazilian Jiujitsu competition.
And if you’ve ever had any experience with this sort of situation with a BJJ tournament, please leave your thoughts below.
Thanks again to Tj!

Do This BEFORE You Pull Guard!
Faking a guard pull can set up your takedowns, and faking a takedown can set up your guard pull. Here’s Elliott Bayev breaking down this concept for you!
BJJ Competitions Banned . . . Come on Canada
If there was a BJJ tournament in your area that had no winners, no losers, and no medals. . . would you participate in it? Do you think it would even be worth doing? Would you go through all the hard training to prepare for it?
This is the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu question that was thrown to me recently on Instagram.
Our friend who lives in a particular part of Canada where prize fighting was banned. And it just so happens that Brazilian Jiujitsu competitions were classified as prize fighting.
After the law was passed a BJJ tournament was held. And during this BJJ competition. No medals were given, no hands raised and no podium was stepped on to determine a winner.
The questions asked from our friend were. . .
Are medals a big deal? And should be people feel grateful for having a some sort of tournament in their area?
Now I don’t know all of the details of this situation. But I interpreted this as there were no winners and losers.
And I answer the question accordingly.
I hope that maybe you find the video at the very least, entertaining and possibly give you an idea as to why many people compete.
Thanks for watching.

Should You Pull Guard in BJJ Competition
Should you pull guard in BJJ competition, and, if so, what are some good ways to do it?
If you want a smoother, more effective guard then check out volume 2 of The BJJ Formula that Rob and I did together at http://www.grapplearts.com/formula
And if you want 3 easy and relatively low risk takedowns you can incorporate into your BJJ game check out this article: http://www.grapplearts.com/easy-throws-bjj/

I Can’t Afford BJJ Classes ( What Should I Do? )
What do you do if you cannot afford BJJ classes?
This was the question I received recently when Chad and I were doing a bit of rolling and drilling leading up to a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition.
(The full length vlog style video of us is coming soon)
In the video I explain that I believe that if you really want something, you’ll find a way to make it happen.
I was a poor kid with relatively no money. But I worked a job and paid for myself and another which equated to $160 a month. Which was a lot at the time (2003).
So I just don’t think that giving up because you say you don’t have enough money is a good excuse.
If you want something to happen, make it happen.

Why Your 1st BJJ Tournament isn’t about Winning
One of the most common questions newcomers to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu have is, “How long should I train before I compete?”
And the honest answer to this is that there simple isn’t a magical 1 size fits all number.
There’s not an exact time that works perfect for everyone. It often varies depending on the person who starts BJJ training.
Often, what I tell me BJJ White Belts and beginners to do is formulate a simple BJJ game plan. Identifying at least 1 technique or series from each of the major basic Brazilian Jiujitsu positions.
These have to be good “go-to” moves that you can rely on when things get rough.
After this basic Bjj game plan is in place. Then you can start to consider a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu tournament or competition.
I personally competed in my 1st BJJ tournament after 2 weeks of training. But I’m not a great example since I was involved in Wrestling first.
When I wrestled I was forced to get comfortable with competition.
If you’re a beginner or BJJ White Belt and you’re trying to figure out “When will I be ready for my 1st BJJ tournament” or “how long before I compete” . . .
I hope this video is helpful!
