More than two years ago, I attended a seminar taught by Vinicius “Draculino” Magalhães, and there was one thing that he showed that blew my mind.

It wasn’t some complicated or intricate technique either.

Nope.

It was just a small alteration to a transition that I learned when I was a white belt. I had to ask about it, and that one small thing was more than worth the investment.

Professor Mackens Semerzier received his Black Belt from the hands of 7th degree Black Belt Master Pedro Sauer in July of 2013. He was a dedicated student at Linxx Academy under the watchful eye of current Coastal BJJ owner and head instructor Professor Nestor Bayot and Linxx Academy owner and head instructor Professor Frank Cucci. Professor Semerzier dedicates a majority of his success to the training and mentorship he has received from these two well respected instructors.

Professor Semerzier proudly carried the flag of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu into the MMA cage and proved the effectiveness of the “Gentle Art” against the best fighters in the world. Professor Semerzier has competed in both the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) during his MMA career. He is known as a “FINISHER” from his early amateur days in the regional area which followed him into his professional career, impressively ALL of his victories come by way of submission or stoppage by the referee. He has carried that mindset into his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training and teaching philosophy. He is often quoted saying, “How real is your Jiu-Jitsu?”

Professor Semerzier retired from professional MMA in 2012 after winning the WKA featherweight title by second round submission to focus on finishing family and finishing his degree in business at Virginia Wesleyan College. In 2014 he completed an extensive and detailed instructorship program at the Gracie Academy headquarters in Torrance, California under the instruction of Rener and Ryron Gracie. Combined with his years of previous formal instruction the manner in which he can command a class is second to none.

Jacksonville Gracie Jiu Jitsu is led by Luiz Palhares who is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor and instructor. Palhares was presented his 7th degree black and red belt by the President of the Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Robson Gracie, in 2010. Palhares spent over 23 years being trained directly by the Gracie family, first under Rolls Gracie until his tragic Hang Gliding accident, then later under Rickson Gracie. He was awarded his black belt in 1984 by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu co-founder Helio Gracie and Rickson Gracie.

During his lifetime Palhares has also accumulated a number of world-class competitive victories. Beginning in 1998, he won both senior heavy weight and open divisions of the Brazilian National Jiu-Jitsu Championships. Later, in 2000, 2003, and 2004, again in both the senior heavy weight and open divisions, he took 1st place at the Pan-American Championship. In 2002, Palhares also claimed 3rd place at the Masters and Seniors International championship.

As an instructor Palhares has taught throughout the US and Europe. He teaches seminars and conducts private lessons around the globe. As a certified Army Combatives instructor he developed a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Combatives program for the US Navy SEALs at Dam Neck, Virginia. At Camp Blanding, Florida in 2010, Palhares taught a five month long Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program for the 3rd Battalion 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) prior to their deployment to Afghanistan. He has taught Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seminars for the US Marines in Tennessee and at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Palhares also enjoys a long standing relationship with the Jacksonville Florida Sheriff’s Office (JSO) to provide instruction.

Professor Mark Sausser, 1st Degree Black Belt Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

A lifelong competitor, Mark started training in the art of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) in 2002. He was intrigued by the dominance of BJJ in combat sports. BJJ also gave him the opportunity to compete without the heavy abuse to his body. Gustavo recognized his dedication to the sport and talent for teaching and allowed Mark to coach classes at the main academy. As Mark progressed and earned his senior belts, Gustavo gave his blessing for Mark to open an affiliate academy in Norfolk.

From an early age, Mark has been involved with different forms of karate and striking sports. He boxed in the Golden Gloves and the Marine Corps. He coached boxing and also competed in professional full contact kickboxing. Mark is actively training to improve his jiu-jitsu and has recently taken up Judo. He is a fierce competitor and a passionate coach. In 2009, Mark won the brown belt division at the Pan-AM games in New York.
