One of the other big fallacies in most Martial Arts Self Defense training is that fights start at full aggression.

There is often a build up of aggression and to be effective in staying safe, you need to know how to manage the aggression (both verbally and physically) while attempting to de-escalate it.

This means understanding ranges and how they must be managed, as well as angles (two of the four things I always teach to control in any conflict).

The problem with most martial arts (Including Many Jiu-Jitsu Programs) is that they only prepare for a fight after it’s already in progress.
