Mistaken Beliefs About BJJ Coaches (Do You Think This Way?)

Today’s video came about while look at my questions from Instagram.

The question comes from a young guy, and the subject is training with his coach, and it was obvious that he had this outdated mindset, which I had when I was younger, which will inevitably hinder you Jiu-Jitsu.

In the video I’ll give a couple of analogies to help everyone understand how ridiculous this mindset can be, and how BJJ is one of the few sports where this is even a thought.

Specifically, I’ll talk about the student/athlete & coach relationship at the highest level in sports like Basketball and Football, where you’ll never run into the conflict that my messenger has.

When it comes to BJJ, a lot of times, there are these unrealistic expectations of what a coach should be, especially in relation to that coach training with his/her younger student/athletes.

This is just unrealistic.

To dive deeper into this, many of us, especially when we are younger, have this mindset that, if while rolling “I can beat up on my older coach”, then “I have nothing to learn” from them in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

This outdated mode of thinking doesn’t account for a lot of nuanced things, especially in relation to the coaches age, health, goals, etc.

Hopefully, if you are young and have fallen into this “coach must be a savage” trap, then you have a bit more perspective.

Remember, winning a roll isn’t everything. There’s so much more knowledge to be gained when you realize that. Keep learning and take what you can from your coaches as long as you can.
