A great documentary on Rolls Gracie.
Rolls Gracie was one of the most important members of the Gracie family, being the family’s champion in the 1970’s, considered to be the father of modern day jiu jitsu through his ideas on cross training in different martial arts. Rolls is arguably the most influential figure in the history of the sport, having affected most of the following generations in jiu jitsu, including great practitioners such as “Carlinhos” Gracie (founder of Gracie-Barra), Rickson Gracie (BJJ legend), Royce Gracie (UFC Hall of Fame), Romero Cavalcanti (Founder of Alliance BJJ team) and many others.

Leg Hook Takedown | Takedowns
Being able to fight or grapple from the Clinch is one of the most important aspects of Jiu-Jitsu.
Unfortunately, it’s also one of the least trained skills in many schools.
In order to have functional, self defense-based Jiu-Jitsu, you should spend as much time as possible practicing how to get to the clinch and how to maintain, attack, and takedown from there (as well as how to disengage).
And, as with anything in Jiu-Jitsu, it’s important to practice being comfortable in these positions so that you can make intelligent decisions on the most efficient option.
We take the submission, pass or sweep the opponent gives us not the one we want because that is efficient – and efficient saves us energy (crucial in a fight).
That said, one of the advantages of grappling over striking is the ability to manipulate an opponent into the position where he gives us what we want. We’re not forcing the thing itself but creating the environment for it to happen.
In this situation, I’m setting my opponent up for one of the most powerful and fundamental takedowns there is: the Leg Hook.
It’s important that I recognize the correct cue for which takedown applies so I’m not setting up the takedown so much as setting up the cue.

Two Takedowns from the Clinch | Drop Throws
I believe that being able to takedown from the Clinch Positions is crucial to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
In general, I teach most of my throws with a focus on my staying standing.
But, in some cases it may be more feasible or easier to go to the ground with my opponent.
When that is the case, these are two of my favorite throws since they can be down from very close range limiting the potential for the opponent to strike you well.

How to Have the Most Brutal Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Side Control Ever
*** Check out my NEW Guillotine DVD available at https://graciemuenster.com/store/
If you want to be able to effectively submit your opponent, you need to be able to control them first. It’s frustrating to pass his guard only to lose control after.
Even better, use your control to weaken and exhaust your opponent. This is the essence of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – break down your enemy then attack when he is weak.
Cageside Concussioncast (now Dirty White Belt Radio) asked Royce Gracie Black Belt Roy Marsh to show you punishingly effective way to pin even the strongest or most flexible person from Side Control.
This way is great when you are doing No Gi and don’t have the grips you would normally have with the kimono. Add pressure to your sidemount!
Professor Roy also shows some tips on how to get to sidemount when someone is defending.
(Sorry about the noise but students were still trying to choke each other)

Three "Dirty" Kimura Attacks
This is a submission I’ve been using for many years that I call the “dirty kimura”.
I like it a lot since i don’t have to give up the underhook to get the shoulder lock.
This means if the lock isn’t working I can almost always go back to a good control position or escape a bad position immediately (if I lose the submission)
It’s especially effective against very strong opponents.
Please subscribe if you enjoy

Defense Against a 2-Hand Collar Grab | Seth Shamp
The problem with most martial arts (Including Many Jiu-Jitsu Programs) is that they only prepare for a fight after it’s already in progress.
But, many fights don’t just begin with punches or already on the ground. They begin standing with shoving and grabbing and if you are unprepared for this part of the conflict then you have to wait until it becomes more dangerous before your skills become applicable.
This is why the Complete Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Program focuses so much on the Standing Self Defense Portion.
Here is Professor Seth Shamp demonstrating how to deal when someone grabs your shirt with both hands and how to get them to let go so we can get away.

Carlson Gracie Jiu Jitsu vs Hélio Gracie Jiu Jitsu
Wallid Farid Ismail (Carlson Gracie Team) chokes out Royce Gracie (Hélio Gracie Jiu Jitsu).
Helio Gracie – Fearless Warrior Tribute
Hélio Gracie ( October 1, 1913 — January 29, 2009) was a Brazilian martial artist who, together with his brother Carlos Gracie, founded the martial art of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, known internationally as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). According to Rorion Gracie, his father Helio Gracie is one of the first sports heroes in Brazilian history; he was named Man of the Year in 1997 by the American martial arts publication Black Belt magazine. He was the father of Rickson Gracie, Royler Gracie, Royce Gracie, Relson Gracie, and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Co-founder Rorion Gracie, among other sons and daughters. According to one of his most notable opponents, Masahiko Kimura, Gracie held the rank of 6th dan in judo.
Gracie had 19 professional fights in his career. He began his fighting career when he submitted professional boxer Antonio Portugal in 30 seconds in 1932. In that same year, he fought American professional wrestler Fred Ebert for fourteen 3 minute rounds. The event was claimed to have been stopped because Brazilian law did not allow any public events to continue after 2:00 AM, but in an interview Gracie admitted that he was stopped by the doctor due to the high fever caused by a swelling, and he had to undergo an urgent operation the next day.
In 1934, Gracie fought Polish professional wrestler Wladek Zbyszko, who was billed as a former world champion, for three 10 minute rounds. Even though the wrestler was almost twice Gracie’s weight, he could not defeat him, and the match ended in a draw. Gracie then defeated Taro Miyake, a Japanese professional wrestler and judoka (practitioner of judo) who had an extensive professional fighting record and worked for Ed “Strangler” Lewis in the United States of America.
Gracie also fought several Japanese judoka under submission rules. In 1932, he fought Japanese judoka Namiki. The fight ended in a draw although Hélio was already twisting his arm when the bell rang. He defeated the Japanese heavyweight judoka and sumo wrestler Massagoishi via armlock. Gracie had two fights with Yasuichi Ono after Ono choked out George Gracie (Hélio Gracie’s brother) in a match. Both fights ended in a draw. Gracie fought judoka Yukio Kato twice. The first time was at Maracanã stadium and they went to a draw. Afterwards, Kato asked for a rematch. The rematch was held at Ibirapuera Stadium in São Paulo and Gracie won by front choke from the guard.
In May 1955, at the YMCA in Rio de Janeiro, Gracie participated in a 3 hour 42 minute fight against his former student Valdemar Santana with Santana knocking out Gracie with a soccer kick.In 1951, famous judoka Masahiko Kimura defeated Gracie in a submission judo/jiujitsu match held in Brazil. Being small and undersized never stopped Helio from becoming a great competitor. A man that believed in his abilities and was willing to put it on the line against the best . For all the disputes that exist today ,nothing can take away from a man that put it all on the line to defend the family name. A tough fighter ,a fierce competitor ,and a great martial artist. All of those that ever did Brazilian Jui jitsu owe a huge debt to small undersized man that refused to quit and helped refine the Gracie style of Jiu-jitsu
